My question is for any machinists or gun smiths or chamber experts... it is not hypothetical... I love the 270 wsm and have everything to reload for a lifetime...
Could a proof research barrel currently chamber in 6.8 western be re chambered for the 270 wsm? Using the current barrel.
Thank you in advance.

The 6.8 Western is VERY similar to the existing .270 WSM. It shares the same 0.535″ rim diameter, and the same 0.277″ bullet diameter, however the 6.8 Western’s case length is slightly shorter. The .270 WSM has a 2.100″ case length, while the new 6.8 Western has a 2.020″ length. That’s just 80 thousandths shorter. Both cartridges, the 6.8 Western and .270 WSM, share a 35° shoulder, so in fact, the 6.8 Western is VERY close to the existing .270 WSM, just .080″ short.

That 87 thous goes along way to pull the LD heavies out of the powder space. The 6.8 Western is what the 270 WSM would have been if the high BC, heavy for caliber bullets were around then. You would have to run the numbers, but I think you could possibly sell the 6.8 proof and buy a pre-fit in .270 WSM with a 1:7.5” twist and a longer throat. I never wanted a carbon barrel. I think that it takes some special jigs to chamber but I don’t know the particulars.

I'd be curious to see what a 6.8 western looks like sitting right next to a 7 SAUM.
