7prc factory ammo

I averaged 2875fps with factory Hornady 175 ELDX out of my 22" Proof, and 2825fps with factory 180 ELDM.

Grabbed a few boxes of Federal 175 ELDX to see if they are getting closer to the claimed (and observed by others) 3000fps, but havent shot them yet.

Got best groups with Hornady 175 ELDX vs the 180 ELDM, and with 2875fps I'll run out of skill before I'll run out of ballistics. So if the Federal ELDX's dont group as well, even if 100 or so fps faster, will stick with the factory Hornady 175's and be totally happy.

I've recently switched to the federal Terminal ascent 170s. My first 4 shots was .411 group. Shot out of my seekins PH2 26 in Avg. Velocity 3076.
I originally shot Hornady eldxs175s, however last year I shot a small bull elk at 200 yards 4 times in the shoulder before if finally laid down and expired 75 yards away. No blood trail not a drop, after quartering it up we found just the jackets of bullets.
The weekend before i shot at a mature bull at 200 yards hearing the whop before it ran off we walked down to not find any blood but knew i hit him, Followed his tracks in sand for a 1/2 mile with no blood. I second guessed myself and gave up, hindsight I wish I had stayed on it. So I've come to conclusion that in my opinion/ experience that the eldxs in magnums such as a 7prc the bullet comes apart at close ranges.

So long story short I finally purchased a chronograph and was able to get some speeds on my ammo. I’m shooting a seekins element 7 prc with 22” barrel. Shooting the Hornady factory eldx I was getting around 2780. I know Hornady 7 prc has been well document as slower than advertised. But I’m wondering are there other factory ammo offerings in that 170-180grain range I could try to see if I can up the speed a bit? Anyone have real life speeds on federal ammo? Or should I consider going with a custom manufacturer like Choice?

Thanks in advance.

I'm betting that the Hornady 175 and 180s were older boxes before Hornady ran out of the good powder.

I have a 20” browning shooting 160cx at 2750

anyone tried the Weatherby 175 berger elite hunter ammo? uber expensive i know.

I have a couple of boxes of federal eld-x 175g if anyone wants a deal. They were pretty hot out of my defiance action and 18in barrel @ 2,936fps. I blew a few primers out. I’m sticking to Hornady.
I know this is an old post but if you still have this I’m interested.

Shot a brand new Seekins barrel yesterday.

New barrel speeds - 22" with Dead Air nomad Ti XC:

180 ELD-M (Hornady) - 2773 (7 shot average)
175 ELD-X (Federal) - 2901 (10 shot average)
175 Fusion Tipped (Federal) - 2806 (5 shot average)
170 Terminal Ascent (Federal) - 3005 (10 shot average)

New Tikka Roughtech in 7PRC that likes the Federal 175 Eldx factory load, sub moa for two full boxes from 100-600yds.

Didn’t love either of the Hornady offerings.

Anyone recreate the Federal load by handloading? I have almost 2lbs of RL26, most Fed primer options and 100 pieces of new ADG brass to go with 200 175 bullets.

Anyone pull and weight federal’s charge weight. I know to start at least 2.0 or more gr below. Thinking start around 62.0 and going up in .3gr to find pressure and possibly that ~2950fps level. Simply seat to same as factory, though with stiffer cases and less capacity seating depth may need tuning.

I’m trying to replicate performance and waste no powder, as it may be yrs before more rl26 surfaces.

This is for hunting and maybe 40yds/yr of practice.

PS. I still have 3 boxes of factory ammo.

I’ve got the same rifle (22” Element M3) with a Nomad Ti XC on it. I was getting up to 2897fps with factory Hornady 180 ELD-M’s last weekend at the range with an average of 2885fps.
