Sorry, I know I’ve got a lot of these threads and this one’s not a ton different. I’m getting ready to buy a gun to use on ideally several elk/mule deer hunts in the west beginning in likely CO 2024.

I don’t reload. I think I’m settled on 7 rem mag, 7 PRC, or 6.8 western. I’m tempted to get a 7 mag now, as who doesn’t like new stuff, but feel like maybe I should wait a year and see. I assume the 6.8 or 7 prc will be a hit. I’m sure 7 Rem mag won’t go away, and it may even be a better choice for a factory ammo shooter like me.

Hornady will flood the market and 7PRC will be everywhere. That being said, there will still be more options in 7mm mag.

7mm mag gets my vote.

Yeah I’m sure the 7 mag will kill elk for the next 15 years just like the last 50. But I can see buying it now and wishing I had the PRC. There’s no real rush for me.

7 mag because just about every walmart has ammo for it. And as far as the 7 prc, I'm still waiting for the stores to be flooded with the smaller hornady king 6.5 PRC ammo, which is basically nonexistence here in south Louisiana and the 7PRC is new. Will be awile for that as well.

My first rifle was a 7mm rem mag. Great all around cartridge. Killed elk and deer with it. That being said, not sure I'd get it again. I have the 300PRC and found the modern cartridge improvements to be very nice indeed. You get all the performance of the 7mm rem mag and then some. Only argument is cartridge availability. Which depending on how much you plan on shooting a non issue. I went through 3 boxes of 7 RM in about 5 years...

Re: 7mm mag
The 284 bullets have only improved over the years. The nice thing is that it's a reliable cartridge that has stood the test of time. It's been on the shelves and likely will continue to be. The PRC may reach that level eventually but the cost in the near term will be more and components will be difficult to come by. When the next ammo run happens you'll be glad you have a cartridge you can more easily acquire. That said, after you have a solid option like the 7mm mag, why not buy the fun new chambering to play with. By then you'll be reloading and less nervous about availability.

My vote is for the 7rem mag. IMO 6.8 has seen the height of its fame even more so with the introduction of the 7 PRC. General availability is of concern and the 7PRC will grow in offerings but no where near the 7rem.

I work in the industry and have asked engineers around me and some that are big long range shooters etc. And everyone echoed the above and said for standard hunting and using factory ammo etc....the 7prc isn't a big enough leap for me to change calibers since I already have a 7rem.

Good thing for you there is nothing to compare it against so you don't know what yo don't know. But anyway you shake it the 6.8 would be at the bottom of my list if i HAD to choose from those 3 and way down my list in general.

The 6.8 western hasn’t really seemed to get much traction IMO. 7mag has been around for a long time for a reason and will by far be the best in terms of ammo availability. 7prc is hot right now, not sure how it will pan out when the next latest and greatest hits the market.

I would have to go with the 7mm Remington mag, as many others have suggested. If for some reason you feel the need for something else, sell, trade, or buy the other.

The proven 7RM for your intended purpose. Don't get too caught up with the PRC/Western bandwagon unless you intend to reload. Some of these latter calibers will likely end up fading away like the Dodo bird.

I was in your shoes a year ago. Ultimately the availability of ammo made my decision for me. I chose the 7mm Rem Mag over the 280 AI and 28 Nosler because I could not find ammo ANYWHERE for those rounds. Times may have changed over the last 11 months, but that is certainly something to consider.

I'll play a little bit of the devils advocate and say it depends on your accuracy expectation, what distances you intend to shoot, and what kind of investment you're planning to make.

If on the shelf ammo availability is priority, the 7RM might be the better choice. But if you intend to shoot longer distances or have higher accuracy expectations, and want the advantage of modern design and ballistics, the 7 PRC might be a better choice. The odds are a little higher that a modern chamber design with match grade ammo will produce acceptable accuracy. Not bashing on traditional chamberings or saying they don't shoot, just saying in a factory comparison some of the stuff coming out is optimized to a different standard.

7rm. Availably (top 10 caliber), different flavors (lots of factory options), and its what is in my hunting camps if I or others forgot or ran out of ammo.
