7mm-08 users...looking for scope suggestions.

Looking for some suggestions for my Browning A-bolt 7mm-08. Will be using this for elk and some deer hunts in Washington. Trying to decide on a scope for max eye relief. 3-9x40, 4-12x40, or something else? brands, models?

I just bought a tract tekoa 2.5-10x42 recently for my 308. Great scope and great value. Have tested it at the range and it has held zero and tracked well thus far. Glass is very sharp. Compared to my vortex razor hd lh, I'd put the glass quality near the same. All tract tekoa and torics have consistent 4 inch eye relief which has been outstanding so far, probably my favorite feature.

I guess it really depends on your budget however. Check out the outlet/demo section on tract's website as they have like new scopes for 30-40% off.

I'm thinking you may want to go with a lower magnification range or a fixed low power scope since you'll be hunting in Washington where it tends to be pretty thick.

I'm sure a lot of people will recommend scopes like the leupold vx2 and vx3, and they are nice scopes, but I wasn't happy with the one I purchased and ended up returning it due to a few factors. Glass quality, reticle, turret feel, etc.

It's a personal decision and the more scopes you look through before you make your final pick the more peace of mind and confidence you'll have going into your hunts.

Thanks. Elk will be on the east side of the state. Wide open in most areas and dry. Deer will be on both sides. Mainly Olympic Peninsula. Just looking for best options for me. Kinda looking at a Vortex Copper head 4-12x44. Has a great eye relief of 4 inches. But I don't want it to be too much scope either. I will check out your recommendation.

I’ve used Leupold VX3s of all varieties on my rifles through the years and have never had an issue. I put a VX3I 3.5-10x40 on my Remington Model Seven SS 7-08 when I bought it a couple of years ago. It’s the perfect match for it and I love it.

Hard to beat a Leupy for max eye relief and a wide eye box. Doesn't hurt that they are usually the lightest in their class too.

That said, my 7mm-08 Tikka wears a Weaver K6 (aluminum MIJ) and I am very pleased with it. The duplex reticle on the K6 is 6 MOA from the cross to the tip of the lower post, which works out beautifully for the ballistics of my 7mm-08 loads. Zero'd at 180 yards, 300 is halfway down the thin wire and 400 is the tip of that lower post. No zooming, no dialing.

I have the Nikon 4x16 (not Monarch, Prostaff?) with BDC circle reticle for my 7mm-08. Some hate them, I like it. Mine's set up approximately 200, 270, 330, 430, 530 (thereabouts). Has worked great for several years. That said, next time I'll buy a Leupold with similar features.

Interesting. Saw one for 115$ new a while back and contemplated picking one up for a budget featherweight backup build.

Is it 6moa on the nut? Or just close?

That's where I got mine and IMO it's the best scope for the $ bar none. Superb optics, ultra light weight, made in Japan and a more useful reticle than most, even my Leupys. They are a steal at $130 and I should probably buy 2 more just to have.

Somewhere I found the Weaver reticle subtensions. I'd have to look that back up, but I'm pretty sure it's like 6 MOA or darn close to it. Maybe 5.75 MOA? I've tested it out to 400 yards and when my load is zero'd at 180 yards, it's dead on at 400 using the tip of that bottom post. Like I said, very, very useful in practical hunting situations when you don't have a lot of time to dial or make decisions.

I like my leupold vx3i in 4.5-14 with the cds. I’ve shot steel out to 500 and killed deer and antelope from inside 100 out to 380 something on my antelope doe this year. So far so good with the cds.

I've got a Leupold 6x36 on mine. Happy so far. If you like a variable, the 2.5x8 would be my choice.

NIB models of these I listed, and other models, CAN be found on ebay quite easily (just watch out for counterfeits, they are found in virtually every make and model of scope now - IF it's listed too cheap that's a sure sign

I have a Swaro Z3 3-10x42 on my .284 Win and it’s fantastic for what I use it for. Not doing any long range shooting, it’s a 300 and under gun for me, mostly because of where I hunt 95% of the year (south Texas).

Just put a Leupold VX 5HD 2-10x42 on my .350 Rem Mag which I will be taking to Wyoming this fall. Great eye relief all the way through to 10x, FireDot reticle, 30mm rube and of course great glass. It has the Custom Dial System where you can exchange the standard elevation dial for one that matches your load. Not sure just yet if I’m going to do that, but it’s a great feature.
