77tmk in a tikka

Hodgdon says max is 23.4 with 77 Sierra HPBT, so not the same bullet.

I got in trouble with TAC loading hot last year, I swore I’d never exceed book max again.

This is true, I have read reports of guys getting in trouble at loads above 24gr with 77TMK in hot weather. I also looked at my shotview again to verify velocity 2880 avg over the last 30 recorded rounds. Factory tikka.

I’d probably be wiser bumping down to 23.5gr again as that was where I started for about 100 rounds.

Does the 77 HPBT have a greater bearing surface?

can you elaborate on why?
If things fall off with 0.1 grain change in either direction it seems like either an anomaly or it needs all the conditions to be just right to shoot there. A change in temp or bore condition might make that load not perform as well. I wouldn't expect that kind of variance to stay consistent.

This is my line of thought as well, especially with temp sensitive powders. I do more shooting and loading in the summer. Hunting it will likely be 50-60 degrees colder. Seeing good accuracy at loads working up to where I stop gives me a bit more confidence.

I still prefer powders that are not as temp sensitive but I can't always get what I want...

is imr xbr 8208 temp sensitive?

Looks like you can add another to the list. Here is a 10 round group. .1 grain up and down from that didn’t shoot near as good. Really kicking my self for pulling those 2!!!

Thank you again!
Do you have pics of the other two groups from .1 grain up and .1 grain down. It would be interesting to see the difference.
Thanks!

You either have a trigger technique problem or your gun has a mechanical issue, show us the other groups.

It was all me and I knew it before I saw it

They kill excellently.

Here's the part I'm almost scared to ask... What's the meat damage like? Specifically at impact velocities of 2100-2600 fps. My only irl reference point is the 77 tmk which does ghastly things to living tissue, so if its like that or worse then the 175's will become a hog round.

Update here. Shoot at 500, impact velocity drops below 1800 fps past that.

Held 1 moa “slight” left to right wind. Looks like I should have held 2. I’m guessing 3-5 mph. 9 shots. Pretty happy!

Got to the range this morning. This barrel is broken in, but brass is virgin Starline 5.56 brass. Getting a firing on it and seeing what seems will work. From this, looks like I have plenty of options. Left column is 75 ELD-M, and right column is 77 TMK. Factory Tikka barrel that was cut and threaded at 18”. Kampfeld added about .075 to .080 freebore to it for me. I snagged this barrel from @B_Reynolds_AK. Shot with an AB A-10 7.62 can.

*All of these groups are powder ladders of at least a 2 grain spread.

keep us posted on final load and results! If you go with the elmd I will be very curious to see how they perform since my set up hated them over both varget and xbr 8208

I already knew it liked both, as Ben had proven it at distance. He had first round impacts at 1,300+ yards with the 75 ELD over N150. I’d like to try some N140/540 and see what that does for velocity
