Ordering a rifle
Tikka action/magazine, their bottom metal, 8 twist 20" carbon barrel, Bastion stock.

From talking to them, they usually just do standard chamber

I am a fan of monos and this will be primarily used for hunting out to say 650. Hoping the 160 cutting edge lazers, hammers, barnes etc shoot well out of it.. but wouldn't want to rule out the 180gr berger/eld etc bullets. Should I be asking them to throat it a bit?

May be apples to oranges but I have a 700 short action, mag bolt face with an 8 twist Proof carbon fiber barrel reamed to SAAMI spec that shoots 168 Barnes LRX and 175 Berger elite hunters to the same POI and shoots them both very well. I shot the LRX out of it for a long time but the wound channels and quickness of kills with the Bergers is impressive.

Thanks for that info.

Have you by chance ever hit an elk or something similar in the shoulder with the berger? Just always liked the idea of if the shot isn't great the monos will punch through, but I haven't done it with either one. What were you running for speeds?

I’ve killed plenty of elk with Bergers and there’s no way I’d ever go back to shooting monos for anything but dangerous game. Build some dummy rounds with your desired bullets and desired COAL and the smith should be able to handle it from there.

My build is a Kelbly's Prometheus short action with a SAAMI spec PBB 20" carbon barrel. I'm shooting up to 2.960" with bullets up to 175 eldx without OAL issues. The 160 LRX likes to be loaded to 3.100" OAL which forces me to single feed. The 180 ELD-M shoots great at 2.960" but I'm limited by OAL for it's true potential. If I did the build over again now I would still go with the SAAMI chamber but would build it on a med or long action.

All that to say I think you'll be plenty happy with the Tikka / SAAMI build for most everything.

Awesome thank you

I've had two 7 SAUMs built on Tikka actions. One was throated SAAMI as a hunting gun with very safe loaded 175 ELDXs and one was custom built for hot loaded 190 Bergers as a comp rifle.

Talk to a good smith about what your goals are and go from there. And don't let them talk you into a gay Remington clone :p

Funny you say that because numbers show that about 2% of the American population identifies as gay which just happens to be the same exact percentage of bolt action rifles in existence that are tikkas. Coincidence?

I've throated a bunch of 7 SAUM barrels, but can't remember numbers off the top of my head...never, ever for a mono though (gross)

Like Tanner said...make you a couple dummies with the bullets you intend to use with the base of the ogive in the right spot and send with the barrel. You shouldn't have any issues with the available COAL the Tikka offers, but definitely don't stick a SAAMI throat in it.

I have a 7SAUM chambered/throated with a SAAMI reamer. My measurement for the 160LRX to the lands was 3.153 COAL. However I found best accuracy with a COAL of 3.095.

22" proof RL 26 and just under 3050. I suspect it maybe a hot load based on velocity but can't find any other signs of pressure and I have been through a few firings and brass life seems good.

Yeah that does sound pretty hot but I've also never found rl26 to play with it. I'm having mine built with a 20" barrel and was hoping for 2900+ with rl23
