7 SAUM or 280 AI

Is the 7 PRC just gonna be a necked down 300 PRC? I went with a 7 saum for a reason, and where long action 7’s are concerned, there are already plenty of good options.

You can always do what I do...debate back and forth between the two and never make a decision...then take my 300 WM out and kill stuff.

The way things are going...I would buy the first brass you can find (ADG 7SAUM or Peterson 280ai) and then build the rifle around your available brass.

7 saum...Medium action, wouldn’t consider it with a SA

If you want to build one in 2021 I'd place backorders on brass for both and once something ships cancel the others, seems like a good way to make the decision. I built a 7RM last year on a Tikka and if I do it again I'd run 7SAUM, in a Tikka I'm limited to 3.34" and luckily I found a load with 0.120" of jump right at 3.34" the gun likes, but it would be safer on a new build to know you could seat closer to the lands.

If you want a 20” barrel, why not go with a 7-08? My 140 grain Partitions and Accubonds are going 2860fps in my 20” barrel. I’m taking it on my next elk hunt.

A reliable gunsmith told me a couple weeks back that Hornady has plans to introduce their version of a 7 PRC within the year. Apparently he works with them from time to time so I would consider him a reliable source.

I asked him the same exact question about the 280ai and SAUM and he recommended I wait untill the new PRC came out.

Why? So you can wait til 2023 to find brass? There's not a big enough difference in any of these cartridges to justify waiting on 25fps... maybe.

Yep, works great in 7-08's with mag primer. I just wish I could find some more, down to my last 2lbs.

Question related to this: I have rem 700 long action magnum bolt face. I was set on a 7 saum but can’t find brass. I have about 30 pieces of 280ai I found last year at the range. Can I buy a standard bolt face and have it swapped out so I can build a 280ai?

I got 100 Pieces of virgin 7 SAUM Bertram I'll sell ya on the cheap. Cheaper than a new bolt.

Last I heard ADG will have another run of 7saum brass available around June.

I really had great luck with my 7SAUM. I was only shooting 150 ELDX, at 2.8

Check out the 7 Sherman Short Mag.

It is a better SAUM. Shoulder is pushed back so you can run 180 vld in a short action wsm magazine. Taper is blown out and 40 degree shoulder for more case capacity as well.

I get 3060 with RL 26 under 180 vld in my 7 ss with 26" barrel, easy load.

I am building a 20 or 22" next, and the case efficiency won't drop me below 2960 with the 22".

Or the 7 Sherman Max, which is an improved SAUM with a 40* shoulder that has ADG (Sherman headstamped) brass and dies available right now on the website. Or at least they were last week when I ordered mine

The SAUM key for me is the lack of a 40 or even 35° shoulder. I much prefer the 30° shoulder.

I've read some very impressive numbers with StaBall 6.5 running 160's out of the 7-08. Upwared of 2850fps with 160 Accubonds. I'm currently working up a load for 140 TTSX's with StaBall 6.5 in my 280AI.
