You know that saying putting the cart before the horse, well I did just that. One day while bored, I found myself browsing the internet and next thing I know I have two boxes of 7 SAUM brass headed my way. So now I am going to build one.

I will use a short action defiance classic on a HNT26 chassis. What I need some input on a couple of items.

1. Barrel length? I was planning on a 20" barrel, would you keep a 20" or potential drop down to 18".
2. Bullet? I was planning on either berger 175 elite hunter or 162 eldm/x

If any of you have a 7 SAUM any input would greatly be appreciated and if you had to change your build what would that be?

I think 20” is a great length.

Edit: depends if you're intending to use it suppressed. If not I like 22-24", if suppressed 20" sounds good. Mine is 22" and was longer than I want with a Ultra 7.

I have a Remington Model Seven with a factory 22” barrel in 7 SAUM. I don’t think I would want it any shorter. I’m shooting 160 grain Accubonds and Partitions at 2950fps.

If your action is cut for it I'd use a Wyatt's 3.100 Baney magazine box or maybe talk to the guys at UM about using one of their DBM setups because I believe they have a SA setup that'll allow up to a 3.150 OAL which should be plenty of length, even in a SA, for even the very long 180 ELD-M's. I'm seriously considering using their DBM setup for my 25 SAUM build or at the least talking to them about it to make sure it'll work like I "think" it will.

If I was putting together a 7SAUM I would build it to shoot 180 ELDMs, which you would want a medium action for. I would ensure your twist rate could accommodate that.

I would not shoot any other 7mm bullet if I could shoot 180 ELDM.

Best friend just put together a 7 SAUM off the tikka action with a 20" carbon 6 barrel with a Mcmillan stock. Thing is sweet. Topped it with a NF NXS.
175 elite hunter, ADG brass, 61.7 N560, 215 primer, 2.962 COAL, 2858 fps, 5.1 SD / 9 ES

For those saying medium action, which one do you recommend or have?

I had a SAUM on a short action. It was a tack driver. 24” and shot 175s about 2830.

I’m rebuilding it off a lone peak alpine cut medium and dropping to a 22” barrel. Will shoot 168s this go around but will have it throated long for 180s if I want to ever go that route.

The medium is definitely nice so you can run an array of bullets. My 175 eldx were jumping .053 at mag length. 162s and 168s I could run to the lands. But the medium gives you the option to run all of them

It will be suppressed. I will not own a rifle that doe not have a suppressor on it :)

I’ll be the odd dude here and say I have no issues w my 7 saum in a SA shooting 180 hybrids. It’s built on a 22” bbl and running the 180’s at 2840 and easily getting 10 firings on the brass so the load is fairly mild. Very capable at 1000 yards in both velocity and energy from most anything in the lower 48 (1805fps, 1303ft lbs energy at 24.7 inHg @58°). Could you get more w a medium action or a LA, probably, but if you have a SA already is it really worth it?

What’s your load? I personally have a SA 7 SAUM in a 22” as well but if I had to do it over I’d go medium with 180 ELD-M in 22”. In BC so no suppressors for us.
