Anyone willing to share overall lengths on 7 SAUM handloads along with what bullets your using? I'm debating between different actions for a new build. I've ruled out unmodified short actions, but am still deciding between short actions with extended mags and modified bolt stops, medium action or a long action.

If you want to throw in how many grains of what powder you're using, and what velocity from what length of barrel you're getting I'd be stoked to hear that too.

180 ELD seated about ideally was just over 3.1” COAL if I recall. 175 eldx is just a little shorter.

I have mostly used h1000 and 175 eldx in the low 2800s with a 22” barreled tikka that is throated to run em like in the picture. Going to try something different with it this year.

If going custom I think a XM length is the best play but you could definitely do fine with a 2.995” capable short action with 175/168 Berger’s, 162 eld, etc.

Thanks for posting! What are you thinking about doing different with it this year? Going with a new chambering?

I shoot 180eldms @ 2800 out of the 22" barrel. My COAL is 2.940 and I have an R700 with a Wyatt's box. I just had my gunsmith chamber it for the 180s when he chambered the barrel. Shoots lights out!

I have the 175 eldx loaded at 2.950”. Shoots fantastic but too long for my SA Defiance. I am going to bump down to the 145 LRX and load them 2.900” or shorter. Feeding will be way more reliable.

How far off the lands are you at with your custom chambering? Do you find that you have excessive jump with the lighter weight bullets?

I’m contemplating a 280 ai as I have a donor long action. If you’re thinking of going long action what advantage do you see of 7 saum over 280 ai?

near as I can tell the only advantage of 7 saum over 280 ai is the short action
This is a genuine question not some sort of trolling. I need a light recoiling longer range loaner gun that will be capable of killing elk. And if m debating between the 2

Great question... I've been debating over those two cartridges for a while now, and still I'm torn. The 280 AI also seems like a great cartridge. It holds more in the magazine, chambers smoothly and has a great reputation in it's own right. The reason I'm leaning towards the 7 SAUM is because I've bought into the idea that it handles shorter barrel lengths better and even though I may use a long action I can still go with a 20" barrel and not lose to much performance. I'm also intending on using heavy for caliber bullets and want to be able to seat them out further than SAAMI spec. I have a 30-06 that I load for now, and have on a few occasions been frustrated with how deep i have to seat the bullet in order to fit it in the magazine.

Everyone that's had either round seems to love it so I figure I can't go wrong either way. The 7 SAUM is what my gut is telling me, but maybe the 280 AI would be the better choice... No, it's the 7 SAUM...

This thread I started a couple days ago dealt with that very question.

I wouldn’t do a long action or a short action for a 7 SAUM. If I could do it over again I would do the XM length action for it. Problem with the XM action length it somewhat limits your stock choices, however, seems like most of the reputable stock builders still inlet for it.

I think I'm about 0.060 off for the 180ELDMs.

I'm just working up a load for the Barnes 139LRX right now, according to my measurements I can reach the lands with that bullet if I so desire and stay within mag length. FWIW I measure the lands when I start out using the cleaning rod method. I use that as my "never exceed COAL" then generally don't worry about that distance anymore. I let the groups determine where I need to be in terms of bullet seating depth.

My opinion on the debate between the two chamberings is that I think you're right that the 7saum will be able to utilize a shorter barrel a little better than the 280ai. The main (only?) downside to my setup is I only get two in the mag. Again it's a short action R700 with a Wyatt's box. I personally went 7saum because I already had the SA donor. If I had a LA I wouldn't have hesitated to go with 280ai. If I was buying an action to build it would be a really tough call because I really like SAs, they just seem to fit me better ergonomically. The combination of a shorter barrel and a short action makes this thing just so handy, I really love it.
