Looking at the Barnes LRX long range, anyone have any real experience. Wasn’t to impressed with federal 175edlx. Heard Hornady is finally reaching speed on a few of there boxes. Wanting something consistent to shoot long range if needed.

Any recommendations appreciated

80rd average with Hornady Precision Hunter (same lot) was 2852fps in a 24" barrel. Hornady published velocity in 24" barrel is 3000fps...

I can't comment on the terminal performance on the Barnes, however at the range it's been promising. Very consistent shot to shot with a 20rd mean velocity of 3009, published is 3050.

Federal Terminal Ascent 170gn doesn't shoot (for me) as well as the barnes with a 40rd average velocity of 3003fps published 2950. Again, can't speak to how it performs on game.

I'd be keen to try the Barnes Harvest / Sierra combo when I can find it locally.

I was going to suggest trying 170gr terminal ascent as I think it’s a great bullet BUT I can’t find it in stock anywhere. Why is 170gr terminal ascent seemingly impossible to find? Any ideas?

The 170 terminal ascent is what my gun shoots best. Significantly better than Hornady. Sub half in groups at 100 very happy for factory ammo

Groups will be variable depending on the rifle, but I can confirm out of the three factory flavours I've tried the 170gn TA is the only one that met and actually exceeded box velocity. Federal doesn't state what barrel length the published velocity is from though.
I’ve also seen multiple reports of the 7prc TA exceeding box velocity with 24”. My dads 300wm exceeds box velocity by an avg of 120fps with same federal loads.

Avg 2815 on 175g ELDX on my 20". Less than 50 rounds down the tube thus far, hoping it will settle in around 2900 or more. I don't really care to specifically measure my groups as the rifle is more capable than I am but its definitely sub minute 5 shot groups

Another 170gr TA fan here. Highly engineered round. There's a great article about the TA by Tom Beckstrand from Guns and Ammo. My rifle shoots constantly under 1/2" at 100yds. I can get 1/4" on a good day. It's what I'll be using theis November for my AZ elk hunt

I was hitting 10" steel plates at 800 yards with 170gr 7PRC TA's consistently with my TS Customs rifle, so i know it's accurate at distance. Don't have any hunting experience yet, but from what I've read, it should perform as advertised

You mentioned factory ammo? If they fit try Gunwerks 180 Hybrid

I had great success with the Barnes 170 ttsx in Africa
Took wildebeest, kudu, gemsbok, impala, blesbok, warthogs, and monkeys cleanly out to 378yds. Bullet recovery from a 168yd shot on the kudu. Broke the shoulder and stopped under the hide on the exit side.IMG_0322.jpegIMG_0870.jpegIMG_0972.jpeg

There a tons of good factory options out there, with each of them having certain advantages and draw backs.
When I am looking for a factory load I am focused on 2 important factors:

1- Shot to shot accuracy resulting in small group sizes
2- The bullet being used and how it performs on game

HSM trophy gold checks both of these boxes for me. Berger VLD and Elite hunter bullets, which are focused pinpoint accuracy and terminal performance. I have had sub MOA group sizes with our 175 Elite hunter and 168 VLD. The combination of heavy for caliber, frangible bullets at impact speeds 1800 fps or higher result in impressive wound channels.
