On a "proportional bases" , how does the 180 gr Hybrid fired from a 7 mag with a 26" barrel , compare to the 215 gr Hybrid from a 300 mag with a 26" barrel? Going on a caribou hunt in Sept of 2015. I know my 162 Amax will do the job, but felt that the 180 Hybrid would be a real help in the windy conditions. More than comfortable shooting to 1000 yds, but weather will dictate the range.

You should be able to get 2950+ from a 26" 300 win and a 215. I get 3035 from a 28" and have seen 2980 from a 26" across my Oehler and MS. All with H-1000 These are max loads but the brass does have 10+ firings so not over pressure.

I am not exactly sure what the 180 will do from 26" 7mm REM. But I doubt you will top these velocities of the 300 win. with a 215. Probably real world velocities of a 180 from a 7 Rem will be more in line of 2850.... 2900 maybe across a reliable chronograph.

The 180 hybrid has a G1 BC of .674 (If I remember right) and the 215 Hybrid is .696.

So as you asked, in comparison, the 300 win with a 215 will have more velocity, retain more velocity, have less wind drift and arrive with more energy at any distance than a 7mm Rem with a 180.

Jeff,

When I ran the numbers at 2950, it gave me a MV of 1685 and energy at 1135 lbs at 1000 yds. That should be more than enough to handle a caribou...?? This will be my first hunt for caribou.

Thanks,
Jim
