For the most part I only archery hunt.
I am looking for suggestions on what to do with 7 elk points.
Evidently they don’t expire until after 10 years of inactivity. Well I haven’t done anything since 2021 so it’s only been 5 years.

Anticipate the required number of points to jump next year across the board due to the changes coming the following year. Beyond that, a crystal ball I do not own.

I would either:
1. Apply for an easy to draw unit that takes very few points, guaranteeing yourself a tag. Or
2. Wait to see what happens in the coming years.

Kind of depends on your situation - plans are for the coming year(s), how many points you have elsewhere, appetite for elk hunting every year, personal finances, time off, ability to plan ahead, hunting solo, other trips, etc.

You have been sitting on 7 since 2021 and not gaining more?

There were some very good hunts you could have back then for 7.

I know life gets busy but you could have been sitting on 12 points going into next season. That would have gotten you a lot of premium hunts, archery, rifle, or muzzleloader.

Download GOHUNT and use their filtering tool to find the type of hunt you want and go from there. You can still get some decent units with 7 points.

In 2021 I had a bad car wreck and broke my back. I didn’t think I could handle western hunting anymore. So I ignored it is the best way I can put it.
Now 5 years later my back isn’t 100% but it’s nothing like it was the first year or two after the wreck.

I pretty much only archery hunt. So gun seasons are not interesting to me.
The original plan was to do 49 and then get out of the point game all together.

I'm glad to hear that you have recovered from your accident enough to continue to hunt.

In 2025 the CPW gave out 28 NR archery tags in that unit. It had 10 of 11 or 91% chance of drawing with 12pp NR. So you are well out of the running for that now. Unless you wait until 2028 and hope you can get lucky in the bonus draw. In 2028 they are moving to 50% tags to top preference points and 50% tags to the bonus draw for everyone who applied for the hunt code 1st choice. For every preference point you have, that's the amount of times your name is in the hat. If they keep the same tag allotment in 2028 that means 14 tags for PP and 14 tags for bonus.

You can apply for a point in 2027 so that you have 8pp for 2028 and 8 names in the hat. Or use them on a unit requiring less point in 2027.

Or swing for the fences completely in 2028 and go for a super premium tag.
