7 08 Barnes 120gr ttsx for elk?

139 LRX. I almost exclusively use LRXs on game with great results every time. I've only recovered two. A 145 on a quartering away elk @ 433, and a 145 on a quartering away deer @ 466. For elk this year I switched to the 160 for better BC. My bull @ 355 dropped at the shot, rolled a few times, never got up.

My family and I have been using the 7mm-08 x 120 grain Barnes ttsx for years on bull and cow elk. In fact, I just returned from a successful hunt where my 12 yr old son used this combo to drop a very mature 6pt at 170 yards. It tipped over within seconds and didn’t take a single step. The bulls seem to drop even faster then the cows, and neither has gone more then a few steps. All shots have been < 300 yards. Do it with confidence!

Not 7mm-08 but running 7mm PRC 160 LRX in a little over a week on an elk hunt. God willing, will report back damage report.

We dropped our last moose at a little over 400y with the 140 ttsx out of a 7mag. Which is probably a lower impact velocity than a 708 at 100.

Two bulls to my credit with the 120gr TTSX and 7-08. One at 80 yards and the other at about 125 yards. Both in very thick woods in Western Idaho, both essentially bang/flop with complete pass-through. One shot each. This was coming from the 20" barrel of a Browning BLR.

All good to go from my experience!
Cool factor of the lever gave you extra wallop ;)

I guess there is some love for copper around here.

I kinda snickered at the comment that claimed that “there wasn’t a lot of love here” for monolithics. That hasn’t been my experience reading on this forum.

My Dad likes to say that “he was using monolithics before it was cool”… That’s to say he was using them when they were a fairly new item. I’m certain that he’s not the only one.

Between he, my sister, any friends/relatives we’ve recommended them to, and myself, I’ve seen monolithics of all kinds used on game in cartridges/calibers ranging from .22 all the way up to .45 caliber out of a muzzleloader. The results have been beyond satisfactory. I’ve always felt that some of the “hate” they receive has to do with misuse and/or a difference in what the individual is expecting out of a projectile, which is very subjective.

Monolithics are not the only projectiles we use, however, if I HAD to use just one for all big game, it would be the Barnes TTSX. I wouldn’t hesitate to take on any critter in North America with that projectile, as long as I was free to choose between a range of different calibers and grain weights.

To the OP, I wouldn’t hesitate to use that projectile in the manner in which you’re wanting to. It’ll do its job if you do yours.

Incidentally, the only time I’ve personally ever known monolithics to “fail” was years ago when, for whatever reason, my Dad loaded up a couple boxes of 140 TSX’s for my 7mm-08 when I was in my early teens. They were loaded a hair on the slow side. I killed a lot of deer with that load, and can’t think of a deer that was ever lost because of the bullet, but they definitely weren’t as effective as we really wanted. I recall doing a little more blood tracking for a little further than I can remember doing at any other time span in my hunting career. Again, the end result was still a dead deer, just the wound channel was a little bit less than we desired. Lightening up the grain weight for the 7mm-08 should be just the ticket-And should be plenty tame enough that all but the most recoil sensitive shooters can shoot it well.

My thoughts exactly. The TTSX is a wonderfully effective bullet if used properly, just like any other bullet.

I believe some here mistake less arguing from copper lovers for a lack of love. We live in a good time when almost every bullet can be a good hunting bullet.

Add me to the copper crowd. I will still shoot bonded bullets but after bad experiences and lost animals with non-bonded lead core I am 100% done with those.

I love TTSX. They are accurate out of everything I have, expand quickly and drive deeply. IMO people that don't like them associate them with blue state politics, not the bullets themselves.
