6mm for big game

Lots of folks have success and confidence with various ELD, VLD, TMK and other thin jacketed frangible bullets and I can't dismiss that or argue with it. What cartridge are you launching them from.
Elk make a challenge to the recipe for my comfort. TTSX, LRX, GMX, Hammers, Partition Swift Scirocco and Accubond would be where my warm and fuzzy zone is. Deer my favorites are 95 grain NBT, Gamechangers and 85-100 grain Partition if reloading, factory the 95 grain fusion is my favorite but really most bullets will ruin their health if you do your part.

I agree with Jim. .243 bullets can certainly kill elk, but I’d be pushing a mono fast, keep ranges short, and limit shots to very favorable angles. Depending on the cartridge, the 6mm is great on deer and antelope sized game. Hopefully it has a fast enough twist for the heavier monos if you’re going to put one through an elk. The 88gr shock hammer is the top of my list for elk with a 6. I have a .243 that has been my kid/spouse hunting rifle for years. It has taken elk cleanly, but I’m rebarreling it to 7-08 improved with a suppressor to fill that role.

I've used the 95 and 100 grain partitions...and the 85 grain TSX on deer and antelope. From 35 yards out to about 230 and have had great results with all three.

I wouldn't hesitate to use any of those on elk. I agree with keeping the shot distances shorter and shot angles favorable.

It's a Creedmoor. I got it for practice and varmints but also for my wife. I think she will enjoy shooting it more that her 7mm-08. So, she has the '08 for elk but if she ends up being more comfortable with the 6mm it may become her all around gun. She wouldn't be shooting at anything over 300 yards. I like to get her as close as possible.

I like lead free bullets that go pretty fast.
That being said I’m about 75% sure I’m going to sell my 6.5cm because those 120gr gmx and 129gr ttsx aren’t very big to begin with, and even when they double in size still aren’t very big.

Thats a really good point, between my wife and I we've killed 5 bulls with my 6.5 saum.
I can definitely say it's not the right tool for elk beyond 400 yards, and its now strictly our timber rifle where shots will never exceed 200 yards.
The 140 partitions have been awesome but I'm going to give the 127 lrx a try.
I know you can kill an elk with a 6mm but I'll never chance it, if its not hit close and perfect its gonna be a disaster

I agree 100.
I shoot the lead free bullets because I don’t love eating lead dust, and the 100% weight retention is awesome.

To answer the op question I would prob go with a 6cm ttsx or superformance gmx as choice number one, but since it’s such a small bullet diameter maybe would consider an accubond for slightly larger expansions.

as for me though, I think 7wsm/saum or 270wsm/win will probably be what I swap the 6.5cm for.

Based on the 223 thread, I don’t see how those TMKs wouldn’t work. I plan on rebarreling a tikka next year to 6 creed and using those 95gr TMKs for deer. If I ever hunt in open country I may try them on elk too.

95 tmk or 108 elite hunter. A bullet that makes comparatively narrow wound channels (mono) isn’t what I’d use if worried about a cartridge being undersized.

Why not? The large consensus is they work great. I have a sample of one using a copper frangible and it worked great.

1. Their BCs are significantly overstated. They are trying to market them as a long range hunting bullet when they have a BC similar to a partition or worse. After 400 yards its like pulling a parachute.

2. Their owner Steve is an arrogant Ahole. I have had several interactions with him on another forum and he is a real piece of work. That coupled with his false claims about BC and how these should be used really turned me off. He also keeps pushing this lead poisoning agenda - like anybody who shoots game with lead bullets or pellets is going to die from it (eye roll).

3. As long as I live in a free state that gives me the ability to choose what type of bullet I shoot, I will never shoot monos.

Thanks for your opinion. Glad to see you have real reason behind your post and not the average "just because" reasoning.

LRH right
I've never used his bullets but I will say its super annoying how they push hammer bullets and Sherman wildcats in literally every thread.
Seriously I'm so freaking tired of every post ending in "build a Sherman it'll outperform everything ", or "shoot hammers they kill at 2500 yards"
Well I built a 30 Sherman mag just to see, and with apples to apples comparisons it was only a 50 fps gain. Not even close to worth it
