6CM barrel length recommendations

I’m always the outlier in these discussions, and it depends a bit on other factors (e.g., stock, muzzle device, hunting style), but I personally view the drive for shorter and shorter barrels as a bit overblown and unnecessary.

I have a 16” and a 22” currently, running both with an OG6S. My next barrel will be 20 or 21” inches.. My 22” 6mm Creed isn’t too far off velocity wise from my brother’s 18” 6mm PRC, yet I’m getting there with cheaper ammo and less recoil. And with the OG6S, the overall length of the two platforms (when factoring in his Scythe) isn’t that noticeable.

I am in the process of having a 6CM built with intentions of putting it in a Rokstock lite. I don't reload so would be shooting factory ammo or purchasing through UM to get the 116TMK. is there any advantage of choosing an 18" barrel over a 16"? I will have a dedicated suppressor and considering the OG6s vs using my current TBAC Dominus. (also open to suggestions/recommendations on the suppressor choice)

My current comfortable range for hunting is inside 400 yards but if I can improve my skill set my goal would be to have effective terminal ballistics to 600 yards eventually.

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you in advance
16.5" is what I run with an OG6. I can't say how it feels in an RS lite, but in a regular RS, it has a nice balance in the hand.

so just when I make up my mind on 18 you make me second guess and consider just going 16 and determine my max range according to my speed with the shorter barrel. lol

Pull a Solomon and split the baby. Go with 17" and be happy.

If 600 yards is your goal, 16” is all you need. My 16” creed is getting 2850 with my hand loads using 116s and that gets me to 850 yards at 5,000 DA

16” with an OG6-S is the way…

With a current Alaska safe hunting (wet) load of 116 TMKs, the gun maintains 1,800 FPS past 800 yards.

Man, i'm a card carryin member of the ugly (but functional) gun squad but putting putting orange vet tape on that pretty $2k peice of wood is a step too far! haha!

Agree 100%. That's the beauty of these OTB cans to me. You can get closer to velocity of a bigger case with less powder/recoil/noise/barrel wear by just using a longer barrel at same OAL as a shorter barrel with a muzzle forward can. I've got 18" 6 creed barrels now but they were purchased with a scythe/U7 in mind. Now with an OG I'd rather have a 21" 6 Dasher.

I never wanted a 20" barrel before I owned suppressors, why chase one WITH a suppressor?

I’m with you. The wood doesn’t get quite as hot as the carbon but it’s still enough in those 105 plus days to be annoying/hot enough on my face to throw it on.

I have a 19" barrel with the og6s suppressor to run 116tmks I wanted good out to 800 yards (im right at 1800 fps at 800). Going to use it for this hunting season and decided if I want to go shorter or not. I figured i'm used to a 22" barrel and this will give me the same length but suppressed with the otb can

What elevation are you doing your hunting at?
forgot to add that. I live in the houston area so am about 200ft for practice but it is primarily being built for hunting out west and depending on the hunt would be between 3000-8000ft? my last hunt in Idaho for bear averaged around 6000ft

I think with the OTB suppressor you can afford more barrel length and still maintain the same length as if it was a standard suppressor so may as well go 18" or 20". Shorter is usually better in my book but I feel you get to a certain point that the gun starts getting rear heavy if you go too short. I like my 18" 6 creed with OG6S but my newest barrel is 21" and maintains the same length as my 18" was with my 6" scythe suppressor.

maybe I will just get the OG6s and try it on my 20" Tikka 223 for a while and see how it feels until the Rokstok lite is available again and delay my build. I agree with some of you who are saying I am overthinking it and just need to commit to an option and move on. either option is going to be more shootable/packable than my Bergara 6.5CM MGlite

The OG6s on a Tikka 223 is great. Mine is an 18'
