6 PRC reloading

For this that have the preferred barrels that used the standard .140 free bore, how do the 108-115 seat. Also what were velocities? I’m getting ready to order a barrel and thinking of having them add some free bore. What is the max I can go and still fit in 2.985 mag being 10-20 thou from lands. I see @huntnful is running .200. Also saw some chatter about .180 being pretty optimal.

.180 FB is a really good spot. That’s what I have on mine from PBB. 108 seats really well. I don’t have any 115s to check. .140 FB is definitely on the short side. Not saying it’d be a “handicap”, but it’s definitely sub-optimal.

Perfect info. Thanks. When you ordered from preferred did you just request .180 in the notes? Did they charge extra?

Agreed. .200 is too long for 115’s to be near lands and fit in a mag. It’s really only good for 108’s seated to 2.985”. Lighter bullets about fall out of the case before they get to the lands. And heavier longer bullet need a long jump once you seat them to a SA mag length.

I called and asked them for an extra .040 FB, for a total of .180 FB after I ordered. No extra charge for me.

great thanks.

For anyone using adg brass for I neck down, and not using a mandrel, what size bushing is recommended?

anyone reloaded for 95gr lrx with this rounded? going to test 95 lrx, 103 eldx and berger 108 EH but haven’t seen any lrx data

Yep
24” barrel
Lapua brass
Fed 215M
58.0 g N565
9 shots were about 1.25”
These were “Mexican match” style, I pulled 9 109s and threw these on top. Load development done for a CA Load. That same charge also shoots the 90g Tipped hammer hunters well

I know these posts are only 4 weeks old, but is 0.180 freebore still the general consensus for the ELDMs and DTACs? I'll be on a tikka build with PRC magazines, so not very restrictive from an OAL standpoint. In an ideal world, I'd like to be 0.030 ish off the lands with the start of the boat tail seated at the neck-shoulder junction.

Yes, that’s right about where you want to be. Do you have your barrel yet? If not, who are you getting it through?

Nope, I'd like to put in a pre-fit order on one of the black friday sales. My last one was from PVA, but I'm leaning towards PBB this time around.
Mine is a PBB. 18”, 7.5 twist, .750” taperless, diamond fluting, 5/8x24 muzzle thread. I haven’t determined absolute best accuracy, but it’s plenty for a hunting gun. 8 shots at 1.06” with the 108 ELD. I’m not the best shooter, and definitely the limiting factor. I have .180” FB.

You can ask them if they can chamber it in 6 NSI. The 6 NSI is an optimized 6 PRC. That reamer was spec’d out by @hereinaz and @NSI. It’s got the dimension tweak at the .200 line to eliminate clickers, I believe the .279 neck (which is perfect for Lapua brass, an .180 FB).

I don’t think this was an option when I ordered, so I had them add .040” FB, as their standard reamer is a .140” FB. A positive note, a couple years ago, PBB went through and got new reamers for all PRC chambering that have modified dimensions at the .200 line, so clickers are a non-issue with PBB.

That's good info and I had not seen that 6 NSI thread, so thanks for pointing it out!

It seems like all of you guys are getting away with just necking down in a 0.271 bushing die in one step without having to neck trim right? This will be my first foray into a wildcat, and I'd like to avoid neck trimming if possible.

Correct! I actually use Hornady bushing dies with their .270 busing. With Lapua brass, it’s a single step neck down with no turning, and it gives me 3 thou neck tension

Anyone with insite on preferred free bore for the soon to be released 115-117tmk? My barrel will likley be ready to chamber before I'm able to get my hands on them for a dummy round and I'd like to be optimized for them. Is there any reason to suspect an issue with .180" ?
Thanks

I think .180 is still where you’ll want to be. Let’s give an example that .200 would be optimum for it. So you chamber it that way. Then the gun doesn’t like that bullet. Almost everything else you’d shoot out of it would be seated kinda too far out of the case, or jumping a long ways. .180 is just a really good spot.
