6 ARC Backpacking Build
6 ARC Backpacking Build
Just curious Why did you choose the 6 arc over say the 6 creedmoor?
I have a 6mm Creedmoor in a heavier target/long range set up. I set this rifle up off of a Howa Mini Barreled Action which is available in 223, 6 ARC, 6.5 Grendel among others. 6 ARC will work for me to 400 yards which matches up well with a lightweight set & forget type scope. I get 2700 fps from this set-up with the Hornady Precision Hunter and 103 ELD-X. When I can get some small rifle primers I would like to try the 88gr Hammer Hunters as I should be able to get close to 2900 FPS with those.Just curious Why did you choose the 6 arc over say the 6 creedmoor?
Weight & Budget were factors too. Was shooting for a bare rifle weight of 5lbs. With a Tikka action and a lightweight sporter 22" barrel I would be right around 5lbs 12oz. To get lighter I would have to start cutting the barrel back on a 6 Creed making any remaining difference slim. Cost wise this set up was $450 for the barreled action and $550 for the stock so right at about $1000 which is a pretty reasonable price compared to other ultralight options. "There are no solutions... only trade offs".Just curious Why did you choose the 6 arc over say the 6 creedmoor?
I chose it because I haven’t seen one and I really like the tikka action so figured why not use what I have. Plus reloading for the 6arc is cheaper than loading 6cm 6br dasher etc.I’m not OP, but guessing because mini action.
Not sure why Juan-I’d did one on a tikka. The 6cm makes more sense there or even a 6BR. He must of had a precious 223 bolt opened up to the ARC/Grendel bolt diameter?

I want something very similar but with a classic sporter stock. Probably could be happy with just a factory Howa plastic stock as long as it will shoot 1moa or better. I also would like a matched pair with a good medium range AR-15 6ARC.Did a write up that was posted in the Firearm section but sharing link here too as the lightweight crowd will likely be interested in this build.

You can get one from Stocky’s. A touch lighter than the VG and available for light or heavy barrel. This is a second.I want something very similar but with a classic sporter stock.
Only numbers I have lolShow me da numbers
Where ya seeing arc brass for .48-.55?Only numbers I have lol
Arc brass- $.48-$.55 a piece
All other 6mm brass - $1.00-$1.30 a piece
And ~250 rounds per lb of powder with the arc vs ~218 (or less) rounds per lb with the others. We aren’t talking a huge savings but it’s savings none the less.
It is currently oos but starline 6.5grendel brass sells for $.48 per 1k pieces or $.52-.56ish per 250-500 pieces direct from starline. And it’s just 1 press stroke away from being 6arc brass…Where ya seeing arc brass for .48-.55?
Jealous, who are you getting to do it for you? Curious to see how you/they get a Tikka bolt to the right size bolt face.Very cool! I too have a 6arc in the works but on a tikka action and have high hopes for it. Have everything minus the barrel… I’m patiently impatiently waiting for that, only about 10 weeks to go.

I am having a local(ish) smith open it up. Before finding him I found a couple smiths in Texas that have done the same. As far as I know they just use a cutter of some kind on a lathe and go from 384 to .445Jealous, who are you getting to do it for you? Thanks for the support! I am having a local Idaho smith do the work. The cases fit in the 223 mags just fine but they do not feed. I think it’s because of how long the bullet is and the steeper should angle. I am going to try a couple other tikka mags once the rifle is built and see if they’ll feed worth a dang if at all. If not it’ll be dropped into an aics stock.I fully support your project! Who is doing the work to open the bolt face? In curious if the 223 mags need tweaking to run the fatter 6ARC cases.
