6.5 SAUM 4S - Stalled out?

Love my Model Seven in 6.5 SAUM. Very fast and accurate with 140 Berger's and H1000. Just a fuzz over 7 lbs all up.

It is what I use. It will never be a widely available cartridge so it will always require reloading unless you want to buy it from Copper Creek, as much as I love those guys it isn't cheap.

It is an awesome caliber, if you are going down the wildcat caliber path I would highly recommend checking out the 6.5 Addiction. It has great barrel life and can push it harder than the 6.5 SAUM, also it is based off of Lapua 6.5 x 55 so it is much better brass. Down side is fireforming brass. I shoot a competition rifle in 6.5 Addiction and everytime I do I think about taking it out hunting over the 6.5 SAUM.

The 6.5 addiction sounds like a good one. Could you tell me a little more about this round; velocity, powder charge, case capacity, etc..
I'm really wanting to put a 6.5 together that will get the 147 ELD-M over 3000 FPS.
I've been most seriously considering the 6.5 SAUM, but I've also been looking at the 6.5 WSM for readily available winchester brass, I would like to get at least 1000 rds of barrel life though and I don't need 3200 fps

Brass is not really any issue anymore with the SAUM and it's holding up very well. Should be fine getting 3000 FPS with the SAUM and 147 grains bullets with a 24 or 25" barrel.

Yeah the 6.5 SAUM is really looking good, I have a pile of Winchester 270 WSM brass that I would like to form into SAUM cases.
Anyone know if this will work? The dimensions are really close between the two, the WSM shoulder would need to be bumped back about .120"

I have heard of it being done but have heard it's more work than it's worth however I do not have any first hand experience doing it. Sell the 270 WSM Brass and buy the Hornady 6.5 SAUM brass. Just my .02

Is there a big difference between the 6.5 and 7 SAUM? I have a 7 SAUM in a Model Seven and love it. Just wondering if there is enough difference to have both.

The 6.5 Saum will have slightly less recoil and push a bullet with a little higher bc a little faster but not very much difference in any of those categories

7 SAUM with the heavier bullets like to be loaded long and often require a long action to be loaded long AND shot as a repeater where as the 6.5 works better with a SA.

When you say sheep gun....are you talking about shooting in high wind across ravines up in the mountains? Realistically, how far do you plan on taking shots? Are you talking 0-600yds the majority of the time? Or 800-1200yds? You have to pick a cartridge that will best get the job done for how YOU plan to hunt. For 0-600yds I personally would do a 300wsm with a 1:13 twist 4 groove barrel and push the 150g Sierra Gamekings at 3500fps. Devastating performance on white tail deer at long range. If you are talking 800yds or more, ROUTINELY, then I would probably go with a 7WSM.


Brass options are much better for the WSM wildcats, and you can buy factor ammo if you really had to. I toyed around with the 6.5 SAUM a few years ago, before hornady made that brass for GAP. It was a PITA to make the brass. And my experience with Hornady brass is that its absolute crap. I tried some hornady cases for my 300winmag and 30.06 and it was horrible out of the box, required a bunch of prep, and lasted 2-3 shots before the primer pockets got loose.

How do you plan on using the gun? Maybe the 6.5SAUM fits the bill.....but there may be better options as well.

I'm only shooting 160 grain Accubonds and Partitons loaded at 2.80". I'm not a big fan of a SA caliber in a LA in a hunting rifle. I may go the 260 Remington route instead.
