6.5 PRC or 7mm SAUM

The Long Range Pursuit podcast did an episode on 7mm rounds back in October. They refer to 6.5 PRC several times as a comparison but they’re firmly in the 7mm camp and include some data about drops, recoil, and how they do recommendations for customers.

Interesting comparison. They neutered the 300 wm by pairing it with a 190 VLD.

At least they didn't use a 180 partition like I have seen people do in some comparisons.....

😁 First thing that comes to mind.. "6.5 Creedmoor has ballistics that match 300 WM* with 40% less recoil"

*This comparison is based upon using the school bus like BC of a 180 partition loaded at modest factory velocities vs highest in class BC 6.5 bullet at maximum pressure

For another good read check out some propaganda on the 6.8 western

If a guy wants to run 168 Bergers in a 7 SAUM what does the approximate COAL end up being? I've got a stock Rem 700 in 7 SAUM and its sweet, but limited to that 2.82" length right now.

That is too broad of a question to answer as seating depth could functionally vary close to 0.300" and still have enough bearing surface in the neck. I'd think you could make the 168 classic hunter version fit in a 2.82" box without having to jump a mile to the lands.

That's fair and I appreciate the answer. I'd imagine it'd be difficult to run the VLD version. I look into that classic hunter version.

Considered the 7 Sherman Max? LA with a Wyatt's extended would allow you to load long. Just a blown out 7 SAUM with 40* shoulder, but Sherman has ADG brass available and the new stuff is formed or you can easily fireform 7 SAUM. I was pretty set on the 7 SAUM myself but couldn't find components when I was buying parts, he had brass and dies in stock.

The nose on the VLD is 0.135" longer than the classic hunter so they are quite a bit different in regards to mag box limitations. The BC on the VLD is quite a bit higher too. The 168 classic hunter has roughly the same BC as a 150 ELDx..

So I am going to be building a 7saum, my only thing is its for a super light weight FIlding Black collar arms chassis. I'm stuck between a 16-20 inch barrel. I just want enough energy to kill at 1000 if i need it.

It would be nice to see a few more factory offerings in 7 saum. Maybe something like the 6.5 prc. I feel like that’s the only thing holding it back at this point.

I wouldn’t go less than 20. I have a 20” and it’s stumpy. With a suppressor it looks so dang sexy I want to kick my girlfriend out of bed and sleep with it.

Me why bow if it has enough energy to kill out to 1000. Especially because this build is an ultra light weight build. I do not live in a free state where suppressors are allowed. It’s a sore subject

You’ll be lucky to hit 2700-2750 with 20”. Plug in the numbers. Subtract 25-30 per inch and see where your energy is at different distances.

Evening All,

Here in NZ were commonly running 20" 7saums @2950-3000fps with the 160 class bullets 162 Eldx/m and the 168 Berger VLD . really handy size well suited to the environment down here . A Pal was achieving 2825fps with an 18" bbl with the 168 vld and Superperformance

20" PRC has really taken off pushing the 147 and 143 eld around 2900 to 3000fps.

it got to popular to fast and theirs no powder or hornady 6.5 promos their fetching $300 per box on trading sites here.

my preference is the saum for raw hitting power

I'd honestly say you're better off with 162 Hornady eld bullets as they have a longer bearing surface. Take your remmy 700 and have it cut for a wyatt's 2.995 box and you'll be able to touch lands with most bullets below 170gr.

Both will do the job, my vote would be for the 6.5 PRC, you are more likely to find ammo for it in a pinch, I am always afraid I may forget my ammo on a hunting trip.

I've wondered if superformance would work well in the 7SAUM. I don't see much in the way of load data for it and I've had finicky luck getting superformance to shoot well.
