I am looking at building a custom rifle for the first time and had a few questions for 6.5 PRC owners. I know I can plug everything into a calculator and get numbers but was curious on the actual felt difference between the PRC and say a 6.5 or 6 creed? I am not super recoil sensitive as I am used to a 338 win mag but I would like to step down and build something for deer and elk. I was thinking a 6.5 PRC would cover that plenty but want to get something that makes it enjoyable to shoot so that I go practice as much as possible. Was also considering a 25 creed. Any help/advice would be awesome. Thanks in advance

I would say the 6.5 prc is comparable to a 270 win. In recoil. There is noticeably more recoil than a 6.5 or 6 CM.

I got out of magnums several years ago and now primarily use a 280 AI, 6.5 PRC and 6 CM for my big game hunting.

It’s more significant. it is still possible to spot your shots but with a lightweight stock and set up it can be noticeably more sharp in various field shoot positions.

But if you’re looking to practice as much as possible - the 6.5 PRC ain’t it.

If you want a 6.5 PRC get a 223 trainer. If you want reasonable recoil for a lot of practice - 6mm and under.

Just my experience- both of these identically set up in 223 and 6.5PRC

You need to delete that pic - you are going to scare him away from those rounds with that ugly ass stock…

That seems like a sweet setup! At the moment just trying to keep it to one rifle. You think a 6 or 25 creed would split that middle ground a bit more?

Yeah the big magnums I had been shooting are not real fun. Would you say the PRC is manageable or fun to shoot?

I put together a 6.5 PRC in a KRG Bravo and I’d not do another.

There are ways to achieve the desired wound channel at the desired distance with less recoil.

I still have my first rifle, a 243 win so for this one I was thinking I would do something slightly larger than a 6 creed although I realize the difference in SAAMI spec on them makes a world of difference. You guys messed with a 25 creed at all? I figured a 128 going 2850-2900 would be a problem for most animals

6 creed would be my vote
Everyone I talk to loves theirs maybe I’m just overthinking it. I think I am still coming around to the fact I don’t need a magnum and it’s hard to take that big of step down but the results seem to speak for itself

How do you know what his desired distance is?
Desired distance is 600 and in. In reality at the moment I’m probably only skilled enough to shoot to 300-350 that’s why I’d like something I like to shoot to practice and extend that. For targets/rocks it would be fun to shoot out to a 1000

If you want a big magnum - shoot a big magnum. I think it’s the notion that you don’t need a magnum to kill big game. But lots of practice and extended range sessions with magnums isn’t fun. I did a range session with a lightweight 300 PRC to the tune of 75 rounds - and it wasn’t a pleasant experience

I agree I used to shoot a 300 rum and now a 338 and if I get much past 20 shots it’s not very fun at all. That’s why I’m trying to take a good step down so I enjoy shooting and get comfortable with a rifle that is also great for deer and elk. What I’m gathering is a 6 or 6.5 creed is perfectly reasonable and I think I’m stressing letting go of the magnum with wanting a 6.5 PRC

I built a 25 prc and it’s not bad to shoot, but barrel life is around 1k. Not conducive to a lot of practice. It runs the 134 eldm at right around 2950. I will be rebarreling my 25-06 to a 25 cm when it’s shot out. Less recoil and more barrel life with the same 134.

Put a brake on a 6.5 PRC and there will be less recoil than 6 CM.

I am not a huge fan of brakes as I had a friend shoot a buck next to me without me knowing he was going to shoot and my ears rang for quite some time. I haven’t gotten on the silencer train quite yet either
