6.5 PRC bullets for goats

Great responses from everyone. Thanks! I was considering running a can on this gun and I have a couple of good options on hand. I need to educate myself on these Hunter Hammers. I've never used them. What do y'all like about them?

Excellent penetration and expansion, super accurate with easy load development, superb lot-to-lot consistency. My current PRC load is with 124 Hammer Hunters and H4831SC

I ordered some 124 Hammer Hunters today to try with the H4831SC on the way. Also going to put the suppressor on the rifle this weekend to do a little testing.

I've whacked over 20 animals with the 165 bergers. Big bull elk, large african game, exotics, wt deer and big boar hogs. It's my preferred bullet. It's been lethal and shoots very good for me.

Combo hunt, plus there were grizz where I hunted in BC...

While I haven't gotten to shoot a goat with a 6.5 PRC yet, my current load is a 124gr HH over some H4831sc going 3,160' from a 21" barrel. So far, nothing has walked away from a 124gr HH in both my PRC and a Creedmoor. I suspect it would work very well on goats. In my experience the HH work better than Barnes LRX on every critter shot with them so far and I've used Barnes on goat with great luck.

Just found this and wonder how the OP made out with his load.

In my 260 I used the 140 gr partition and in the 264 WM the 130 hr Scirocco. Have used the Accubond and Grand Slam in other rounds. I guided for goats for 2 years and have been out with friends a bunch too. I like the bullets that open up fast and are tough still like the ones above. With mono bullets speed is your friend so light weight and fast is perfect. The 6.5 PRC is a really good goat round you'll be happy.

They are extremely tough though if you have a bad shot on the first round you could end up with a rodeo on your hands. They sure can absorb punishment. Get a good double lung shot and they die about like any other animal.

6.5 PRC w/ 24" barrel 143g ELD-x with H4831SC (54.5 g) 2900fts and 2910 (suppressed) groups @ 0.39" will take down a Gemsbok at 610yrds. ran 30yrds and staggered another 20yrds before collapsing. groups increased to 0.7 w/ suppressor and same load data.

Used berger 140 vlds in 65 prc on hunt in 2022. Goat dropped dead in place without taking a step. Guide also a vld fan, for just about everything. Only downside is bullet fragmentations - I have no interest in ingesting lead; overall meat loss wasn't horrible, though.

Edit: shooting out of 20" wrapped barrel with brake. Muzzle velocity just under 3000 fps. I don't see any reason for a longer barrel for mountain hunting, personally. I considered dropping to 18" for running a suppressor, but settled on 20".
