6.5 Creedmoor for Hog Hunting over Bait

I have killed close to 4 digits of pigs with a rifle. From 3 to over 400 yards. In open crop fields and dog hair brush. I have never had a single one come after me. I’ve heard sows with pigs pop their teeth when they got my wind in close. I’ve killed sows buried up in middens of grass they cut down and piled up in the cold months so close I literally stuck the muzzle onto the moving pile of grass they were under with their litters. Never has one come to get me.

Have they been known to fight, yes. Is it something you should worry about, probably not. They aren’t Cape buffalo or leopards. Shoot them in the front half and take a hero pic then shoot a dozen more.

We've had a few come after us. One big red one chased my hunting partner to where he climbed the fence and walked on the neighbor's property to get back to camp. My last one tried but the arrow in him slowed him down enough that I could put another one in him and finish the deal.

I've taken several dozen hogs with a bow, and one with a rifle. I'd don't keep an exact count. I did see one go after the landowner. Yes, most of the time they will run away. But most of the time is not 100%.

If under 700 yards load that thing up with 140 eldm and kill those hogs.

Are you hunting them in a pen or have them pinned up against a fence? Not doubting you, but the only time I’ve ever had one come towards me was when we cornered it against a fence….deer or any other animal would come at you in those circumstances.

On a ranch. Plenty of room for them to escape. I'll certainly admit that attacks are rare, but not that they are non-existent. I've seen one try, and my hunting partner had a red one chase him several times over a couple of days until that pig walked by me at about 12 yards and did not see me in the trees. That pig was invited over for dinner at my house.

You’ll be fine hitting them anywhere from the head to right behind the shoulder. My favorite shot placement on them is center mass of their neck…DRT 100% of the time.

+1 on that. It's a pretty big target on a decent pig. And a typical 6.5CM load is great for pigs. 143 ELD-X has treated us well.

Not possible....Hogs have a giant armor plate on and slightly behind the shoulder. Nothing smaller than a .30 cal magnum and bonded bullets.

I know we all joke about the mythical armored plate and generally I agree, but when I was a kid I saw it happen. In the truck about 600 yards out my dad hopped out with his 7 mag and snuck through the brush and popped out 100ish yards from it. This was sort of a normal baited spot and we'd killed many hogs there so it was pretty routine, dad would blast a hog and I'd drive the truck up to meet him. I watched that hog's shoulder explode through the binos and he turned and ran straight towards my dad, he stepped behind a bush and it kept going and didn't turn around. About 2 weeks later we saw the same boar in the same spot, big nasty festering wound on the shoulder right where it should be. I don't know what projectiles he was using, likely a Core-Lokt soft point. Unfortunately he bolted soon after dad hopped out to go in for another shot so we never got to do a necropsy. That was a big ass boar.

Get the video of Ken Moody get hammered by a boar hog in Tennessee, where his knee was broken in several places and he had a deep cut in his thigh. Moody was just lucky the artery was missed.

Here's a link to the Bowsite.com thread on this story:

Ken was chasing these pigs with dogs, completely different scenario than someone simply hunting them or just walking through the woods.

You’re trying to turn hogs into some dangerous animals that attack often, which just isn’t the case.

Reading comprehension problems?
