6.5 CM or 6.5 PRC for suppressed elk gun

Having owned both, the PRC will have a higher recoil. Not saying it’s “high” recoil, but it’s noticeable in shooting offhand/field positions off a front rest, kneeling etc vs the creed.

YMMV.

I went PRC. This allows me to easily mimic the typical Creedmoor performance with a short suppressor friendly barrel.

Those three letters also seem to make Fudds less nervous (annoying) on an elk hunt. Which holds value to me.
Cracks me up when guys will say how great the prc is while crapping all over the cm… like they aren’t shooting the same projectiles and we are splitting hairs over 120-200 fps….

That's a great analogy. The irony there is I drive a F350 crew cab 8ft bed daily. Maybe I should just sack up and get a 300 win mag...

Right. I know a guy who despises 7 Rem Mag. Thinks it's the worst cartridge ever created. Yet now his "end all be all" best rifle ever is chambered in 7 PRC.

I have an 18” 6.5 creedmoor that is suppressed, I’d take it on an elk hunt, no problem. It’s taken goat, a few caribou and hopefully some black bears and an aoudad this coming/next season.

Man, great question. I'm personally battling if I want a 6.5 PRC or 7mm Backcountry. For you, I'd say sell the ammo and get exactly what you want! Good luck brother.

Those of you running a prc what bullet weight range do you tend to prefer?
I'm running a 18 inch suppressed 6.5 prc and I have tried 127 lrx, 140 Norma soft points can't remember for sure what they were, 143 eldx, 147 eldm, and my favorite so far is the berger 140 vld out of this rifle. Target shooting and for fun stuff I run the eld lines of factory ammo but the 140 vld for hunting I have the loads done by unknown munitions.

What kind of velocity are you getting. I’m looking at a 20” barrel for my build.

With a 20” barrel on the 6.5 cm, it’s conservatively going 2550 with factory Eldx. That gets you ~700-800 yards to hit 1800 fps depending on elevation. Just curious what is the need for speed about with prc and 6cm in that case for hunting purposes? I feel like most hunters are hunting inside 700 yards. Just trying to understand if the impact velocity is 1800 vs 2100 at max range if that is going to make a significant difference.

Notionally out of factory 147 6.5 PRC I was getting around 2730-2750

at lower elevations or with 18” barrels you might not get the terminal velocity to 600 yards. I’m shooting an 18” 6.5 creed now and at sea level I’m not getting 600 yards of killing range.

That being said, I don’t have any opportunities to be killing big game at those ranges here so it’s negligible. When I’m out west I have plenty of velocity.

Spicy 147 reloads for my 18” creed are going 2640. Plenty of speed.

Cool that’s good to know. Ya I’m in Colorado so most of our hunting is 8-12k feet. Plan on getting in to reloading soon too. The 18 to 20” suppressed CM sounds like a nice balance.
Unless you hunt on the east side, at our DA, a 20" CM and a 140 grain is a 700+ yard gun. It's much more capable than me. Throw some data into JBM or any other ballistic app and set DA to a conservative 8000 ft, even a 17" CM at 2500 fps will take you past 600.

If you hunt above 10k, it's longer

Cheaper to shoot, less recoil, more handy, all good things

Thats good affirmation, thanks! The only time I will be hunting below say 7500ft would be for Antelope maybe. Other than that, primarily elk. I actually just purchased a 17" new cut and threaded tikka barrel from a guy yesterday, so going to swap that on to my tikka. Guessing Ill get around 2500ish +/- with factory for now. But will reload in the near future and hopefully make it just a little hotter for insurance.
