45-70 what grain

Have a Rossi R95. Will 325 grain be good or do I need a larger grain?

Guy that sold me the gun said I can’t shoot the 500 grain because of the pressure out of the shell.

Thoughts?

You do not need much out of a 45-70 for a black bear. Use what shoots best. The Barnes 325 is devastating from personal experience.

I used the Hornady 325gr FTXs on a Utah Book Cliffs bull bison. No complaints on my end, and the rifle (Henry) shot them better than most other ammo.

325 grain Hornady leverevolution on around 15 deer with no complaints. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on bear, elk, bison, anything... Not sure why you would need heavier

Perfect. I’ll be shooting bears off my property less than 100 yards. We shot one last year at 10’. .300 win mag at that distance is a little much.

Iirc 45-70 ammo comes in 2-3 different power/pressure levels. That could be what the prior owner was referring to. Ask Rossi.

Maker makes some nice subsonic bullets. The 400 and 500’s would work well for under 100 yards. Plenty of penetration and easy on the shoulder.

Yeah he said I could go the bottom 2 pressure levels.

I was around 22-24g of 5744 with an oal of 2.550. Depends on barrel for velocity. Trap door pressures, so no issue in a lever gun.
