45-70 Marlin Trapper

I haven’t really done much with this gun since I bought it last fall. I was wanting to shoot the 410gr SubX bullets in it, but I haven’t had much success getting them to group less than 6” at 100yds. The 250gr Monoflex though, did quite well. I also tried the 200gr Maker Rex HV, but they’re 3” groups at 100- And that’s fine for what this gun will be used for, but I’d rather have the better accuracy over the velocity. The 250gr Monoflex are averaging 1688fps and the 200gr Maker Rex are at 2022fps out of the Trapper’s 16” barrel.

And I swapped out the trigger for a Ranger Point trigger, and polished the sear. It breaks at 1lb 14oz.

I shot a deer with this on Saturday. It got the job done. Deer ran 50 or 60 yards I'd guess. Exit hole on the opposite shoulder was surprisingly smaller than I thought it would be. Excellent blood trail. Maybe I'll give the Maker Rex a go on the next outing with this gun.

What velocity for the subX with the large groups? I’ve shot some larger (450 grain I think) cast lead slugs in the subsonic range that wouldn’t stabilize in one of these. To be fair they wouldn’t stabilize in the other 3 45-70’s I tried them in either. All were pretty much the same twist rate. Had good luck with cast 390 HP, haven’t shot anything with them though.
