40 Mile area caribou, wolves common?

Going on an archery caribou hunt in early Sept. I have no desire to shoot a caribou with a rifle, but I'd kill a wolf with a bazooka if that's what it took. Are there many wolves in that country? What are the odds of seeing one? I also don't want to schlep a rifle all the way up there if there isn't at least a half decent chance.

Also, are wolf tags OTC in that region? Anyone know how much they are for a non resi? What about wolverine?

Pretty sure wolf tags are only $35. I'd buy a tag and plan on not seeing one realistically... I ran into two up in the north Brooks and got within bow range of them bedded, only 2-3 days before opening day for wolves. You can always "downgrade" a more expensive tag for a less expensive animal too. So if it's a two bou unit and you have two tags, you could kill a wolf with one if the opportunity presented itself and you were cool with losing a bou tag.

As for that specific area I haven't personally hunted it so I'd be of no assistance there.

We always have a wolf tag in the group. Granted, never done anything in the 40 mile area. Regardless, for such a nominal fee you should have one.

If you bring a rifle, you won't see a wolf. If you don't bring a rifle, a pack of 15 will walk by.

If I read the regs correctly, you do not need a locking tag for wolves in unit 20E - which is the Fortymile area. Check to be sure. If you're in caribou country you're in wolf country.

Awesome. Not needing a wolf tag is pretty cool. What about wolverine tags?

It's required and will cost a nonresident $175. They frequent the open ridges that caribou often travel, with that said consider yourself pretty lucky to see one.

Agreed I have seen 5 times the number of wolves than I have wolverines. That said weapon of choice for the Wolverines is always a 12 gauge ;)

Tags for wolves? $35? $175? Where are people coming up with this?! I'll kill 10 in unit 20 before Oct 15 without a tag and if I'm there after Oct 15, I'll kill as many as I have ammunition for. Tags, pfffft.

Right from page 10 of the regulations as it pertains to non-resident hunters. If they get a $250 NR trapping license and come back in the fall/winter when the trapping season opens then they can take all the wolves they want/can or as allowed in the regulations.

The regulations are all different for every GMU so you have to read all the stuff on every page. It can be really confusing. GMU 20 is already noted for not needing a NR wolf tag.

I was kidding Ray. I don't buy tags in Alaska and I don't care what non-residents pay.

Look into a TC contender pistol. As a bowhunter I think you should have in your arsenal a firearm that will assist you with other chores as required. Bear spray is fine for the locals that are rude so you don't need a hand cannon revolver.

We saw 13 bears during a week of hunting and killed 2, plus saw several wolves,, I would want a firearm.

Wolves can be taken under a trapping and sports license with different rules and fees. I'm on the road today, but will look it up once I get home.

Only problem with the trapping license is that it does not open until November. Best to just get a tag if one is needed.
