4 men in an 8 man tipi

I only have a 6 man tipi, but have done 3 guys in it with a stove and not felt cramped at all compared to a typical backpacking shelter. This is leaning towards a backpack hunt vs. car camping or river float trips that would require much more gear room.

I know a couple guys who hunted together many years in Alaska but never shared a tent. They each brought their own gear and shelters....pitched the tents 10-20 yards apart. One of their rationales was they actually felt safer that way. No bear could hit both tents at once, thus leaving one of them able to respond to an attack on his partner, should it happen. I find that an interesting bit of logic and hard to fault.
Whoa that is actually very hard to fault and never thought about that!! now that I'm comfortable with camping solo maybe i'll pitch that thought to my buddies to see how they feel about it. It'll save me lots of nights with snoring i'm sure! ha

Poser,

I think space preference has a lot to do with how the shelter is used, and the expected weather. If it's only a matter of using it to sleep in, a much smaller unit will do. If the hunt is long, the weather bad, and the shelter used as a full-on living space for a day or 2....the extra space is valuable. I've known 2 guys to do a 10 day Alaska hunt from a 2-man dome tent and they survived fine. I have a friend who uses an 8-man tipi for himself only and loves it. I used a Seek Outside Redcliff this year which is a massive-feeling shelter. It was great to have all that space for just myself and I don't regret it in any way.

We had 3 men, stove, and gear in a 6 man. Really no room at all and felt “cramped” the entire trip. Sold the ten and now it’s every man for himself.

I always find these threads amusing. You need an 8 man tipi for 2 guys? Really?
Just how fat are you fellas?
I think it's safe to say most people are simply stating their preference based off their experience and making a recommendation and not stating what is "needed". I just did 9 days in a cimarron. Packed light because my plan was solo. Last minute my brother hopped in the plane and joined me for a few days. We had enough room and ran the heater in the morning with no issue but it's not the tent I would've picked if I knew he was coming. When he left, it was awesome to organize my gear and run my clothes lines. I've also spent several nights sheep hunting with him in a legit 2-man. No big deal, that's what the situation calls for so that's how we roll. I've also done 3 people in the cimarron and managed. Again, doable but not ideal. At the end of the day I still prefer my Arctic Oven 10 with vestibule for 2 guys at moose camp. I'll stretch out, run the heater, and stand my "fat" self up to put on dry clothes each day. Every hunt is different and every type of hunt calls for and allows a different type of camp.

My experience with the 8-man is similar to what everyone else stated. 4 is pushing it with stove but doable if you have a gear tent. Center pole tents have a lot more wasted space than people realize.

I agree with those who said 2 guys with gear is about right for an 8 man with stove. I would not choose that shelter for 3 guys or more.

Later in the season, lower temperatures, worse weather, wood stove = larger space requirement. Why? More gear to store, organize, dry out, put on, in the tent; more things you prefer do in the tent vs out; more time in the tent, overall and together. That’s the formula for all the reasons mentioned in posts above.

3 people in a 6 man thats 13’ in diameter is tight with a stove and gear. 3rd wheel gets the door and stepped over. Cant imagine a 4th wheel with only slightly more space. Im actually curious if a 12 or 16 man tipi would be significantly different than an 8 for 4 people.

I do love a 6 man tipi with 2 people though. Able to stand, have a chair inside, stove n wood, room for gear, kick my legs out n relax. Split weight with stove is a mere 3lbs.
