4 man Tipi

Hey guys, I've been lurking around on here for about a year. New to Western DIY hunting, but I am hooked since making my first trip out west last year. In your opinion what is the best tipi option to fit four men with a stove?

I would suggest a 12 man tipi for 4 guys. I have a 8 man, and with 2 guys, stove, and gear that fills an 8 man up pretty good.

I would suggest a 12 man tipi for 4 guys. I have a 8 man, and with 2 guys, stove, and gear that fills an 8 man up pretty good.

2nd this one. Did three guys on cots with gear and stove in my 8 man this last year. Tight- wouldnt even try 4 guys after last years experience. Would vote for the 12 man for 4.

I had a 4 and 6 person tipi and found them to be too small just for me by myself. I just grabbed a 12 man recently and plan to use this with 3 people. I like room to stand and move around without bending over and room for cots and gear. Remember tipis like tents are rated for how many sleeping bags you can lay in it. I think the way you would look at it is: 2 people equal a 4 man tipi, 4 people a 8 man tipi and so on. Even my sawtooth was just big enough for myself. Now if you don't mind limited room, then yeah you can get away with more people in the shelter.

Sadly no, but I have had 3 guys in a 6 man tipi just fine. The conditions are really going to dictate how much space you need. If you have a lot of winter gear, are keeping a lot of wood for the stove, then you will run out of room. When it was the three of us in the 6 man, we had our stove, some of our gear and a good amount of wood. It was tight, we didnt have a lot of room for chairs but it was doable.

I've had 3 in a Supertarp w/ 18" stove, and we slept like hoggs. I think it'd come down to each preference, sleep system, and body mass. I've never owned a 4 man, but did own a Paratipi for a short while. My three brothers, and I spent many nights in that tipi. Sleeping on pads we fit fine all ranging in the 5'8"-5"11", 160lb-185lb range. Typically have some stuff under a tarp outside. I don't spend alot of time in my shelter though as alot of folks do. I also sacrifice creature comforts like standing up in a shelter when im in the woods to hunt. Anywho, I'd take those things into consideration, and I'd use the guide Reaper posted cause it just gives you a good look without its preference. Good luck.

Are you backpacking? Car accessed base camp? Horse packing in?

Could do anything from a Redcliff for the weight conscious to a 16 man if everyone is running cots. 8 or 12 is probably the best turn key answer if you're not sure how you'll be hunting in the future. Or two shelters.

For my use, yes. Depending on space preferences I'd suggest 8 man on the big end, Redcliff on the small.

4+ Man TipiTent™ - WildSide Systems

This is actually realistically sized to handle 4 people (not called an 8 man that actually only holds 3-4 comfortably), rifles and backpacks or more people without rifles and/or backpacks. Doesn't have to be used with inner wall/floor, but the inner wall/floor options sure make it much more comfortable. There's also no other similar shelter with the sheer amount and kind of adjustable ventilation these shelters have--very important for moisture control. Have spent many nights with 4 people, backpack and rifles inside this shelter, often during nasty weather. Between 4 guys, yes, I'd pack the inner wall/floor--it really makes a difference for overall comfort as well as making the shelter bugproof, etc. Mix and match parts to your needs and adventure at hand, however.

I've not had more than two along on backpacking, so I can't comment on four. Personally I would suggest getting a couple of smaller shelters for two people in case you aren't always going with four. Would give you a little more versatility and easier to distribute the weight!

You could also look at the Mountain Laurel Designs DuoMid or DuoMid XL as an option. I have plenty of space in my DuoMid for my pack and gear, plus an area where a dog could easily fit and move around to lay down.

I would second this! I own a 4 man tipi and wouldn't think about sleeping even 3 in it. Have your hunting buddies pitch in and buy two 4 man tipis. When not sleeping 4 guys could sit inside one and socialize during dinner or bad weather. Then split up at bad time onto the two tents.

I had a 12man and it got tight with three dudes, a stove, a pile of firewood, and everyone's backpack and other gear. There is tons of wasted space around the perimeter of a big tipi. I personally think they suck completely. I still have a four man that is fine for two people and gear. The walls are a bit more vertical so the outer perimeter space issue isn't quite as bad. I would strongly encourage you to have two smaller shelters instead of one big one. Much more flexible.
