This was originally posted in a thread about BCA .350 legend uppers, but I wanted to see if any other reloaders had been experiencing similar issues.

I recently picked up one of BCA’s .350 legend uppers when they came back in stock. I was apprehensive at first for the reasons described above, but the price was right so I thought I would give it a try.

THE GOOD: They must have made some changes in the way they leave the factory. My upper came with a shiny polished chamber and feed ramp that hasn’t had a jam or failure to feed with any ammo other than 124 XTP’s. I’ve run Win white box 145’s, Win 180 power point, Win 150 deer seasons, as well as 165 FTX reloads and 124 XTP reloads. Admittedly, the 124’s were tough to feed if I didn’t apply positive pressure to the bottom of the magazine. I believe a slight beveling at the front of the mag may fix the issue, but I don’t plan on running 124’s very often.

THE STRANGE: I’ve have had some strange pressure signs on my brass that don’t appear to have any common factor other than the rifle. All of the ammo described above had a few pieces of brass that were noticeably bulged near the case head, and some had extractor marks. This was true for both the factory ammo tested as well as the reloads. My reloads were well under max using H110 and a Lee Factory Crimp Die. Probably close to a third of the brass had to be thrown out after my last range session.

So, while I cannot complain about the reliability of the upper to “go bang,” I am concerned that there may be another issue. I plan to run about 100 rounds of the same ammo described above through my CVA Scout .350 to see if it produces any similarities. Are there any ideas on what is happening?

The hornady brass is softer than the winchester. No issues for me w win brass. Loading around 27-28 gr of Lil Gun under 165 gr ftx, 158 and 170 fury bullets, and 170 gr interlocks.

Ruger american ranch w 16 inch barrel

I've found published load data to be very hot in my two rifles, CVA and Ruger. I get 2450 fps with a 147 XTP and 25.5 lil gun. This is 1.5 g below listed starting loads. Have you chronied these loads? I also had several cases separate due to headspace issues before I stopped crimping. My advise, check velocity/ drop back on the powder and stop crimping.

UPDATE: I can confirm that some of the published load data for H110 and the 165-170gr projectiles is just a little hot for my rifle. Staying well under max load data and testing various crimp levels with multiple projectiles l, I have still had several sever pressure issues that almost resulted in case head separation. I have had the brass bulge so much the action has been locked up requiring a hammer to remove the spent case. I have had no issues with Lil Gun and will be using it as my preferred powder from here on.

It's the trickiest cartridge I have ever loaded and not for beginners. Loading for an autoloader would only complicate matters. I chronied a lot of factory loads also and velocities were always lower than published except for Federal offerings.
