Seriously thinking about buying one ! It’s a 1:14 twist, go with 200gr barns ttsx or 180 ttsx ?
or am I better off shopping for 225-250 gr
primarily shooting mule deer and nilgai, aoudad, white tail . So I reckon a 2900fps 180 barns should be satisfactory?

anyone with experience with 35 whelen or the CVA scout please chime in

I was looking at those rifles too, they look pretty good and if they shoot as good as my accura v2 I’d be very happy. I was looking at the .444 marlin just because. I also don’t need a new reloading project though…The 35 Whelen is an intriguing cartridge and seems to getting popular again like some of the other old cartridges. Definitely has a loyal following. Those guns are cheap enough I don’t see how you could lose.

Yeah my buddy has scouts in 223 - 270 for his wife to shoot
all are tack drivers 1/2 - 3/4 moa , so to accompany my rem 788 .308win
I need a medium bore and a 9.3x62 is mucho $$$$ over a 35 whelen

I have a stainless CVA Scout in 243. It is a good shooting gun with better than expected trigger.

Did you figure something out? I've been shooting the whelen for yrs, it loves everything I build for it, I recently got some barnes 180 ttsx FB by accident, meant to get 200 BT's. It took 20 rounds to build'm but gettin .46" groups @ around 2800. If you want the data let me know, I'm not around my notebook at the moment

Been shooting my CVA scout in .35 Whelen for a couple years now. I haven't found a load it doesn't like yet, and it did a nice job on an Iowa whitetail last fall. The rifle has been 100% reliable with both handloads and factory ammo. I bought it primarily for hunting deer in Iowa after a rule change a few years ago that added .35" and larger bottlenecks cartridges. However, it doubles as a capable Western rifle for anything that walks.

I have the stainless model with the factory brake. Make sure you have good hearing protection and avoid shooting in enclosed ranges or shooting houses. The blast and concussion will rattle your soul. The recoil is very manageable with the brake, and my teenage daughters are able to shoot 2-3" groups at 100 with it.

Here’s a buck I shot last season with my Whelen at 225 yards, 180 ttsx out of my TC ProHunter. Bullet did as expected. You can’t go wrong with the 180 or 200 grain Barnes. I’ve also had great luck with 200 grain Fusions and Accubonds and 225 grain Partitions as well.

The Speer 180 hot cor is another good option for deer and even antelope at modest powder charges. Very mild shooting and still devastating.

Always heard great things about those. I also shot some Swift A Frames that were freaking stellar. Expensive, but damn good. The 200 grain accubond hand rolled is a great bullet choice as well

Here is some load data I pulled a while back for the TTSX and Hot-Cor.

You can also load the whelen with .357 mag pistol bullets for range plinking or varmints.

Recoil without the brake is going to be up there with .30-06 or slightly more, because your shooting heavier bullets with a pretty good charge of powder. I'm not sure what you've shot in the past, but it is a significant level up if you're used to say a .223, .243, or 6.5 creed. Without a brake or suppressor, this isn't a round you're going to want to shoot 50 or 100 rounds in a sitting.

Here is a partial recoil table with some popular cartridges above and below the .35 Whelen for comparison.

In general:
  • Over 25 ft-lbs free recoil energy (first column) – In a lightweight rifle, even experienced shooters can struggle to shoot more than 15 rounds without pain or developing a flinch, UNLESS a muzzle brake, suppressor, or heavier rifle is used.

I'm not sure if CVA offers the scout in .358 Winchester, but that would be a good option as well if you want somthing in .358 cal. Basically a necked up .308 or .35 Whelen "short". Free recoil energy again in first column.

.358 Win.
(200; 2490; 8)
20.9133.52
.358 Win. (250; 2260; 7.5)2313.93.77
.35 Whelen (200; 2675; 8)22.613.53.71
.35 Whelen (225; 2525; 8)2514.23.97
.35 Whelen (250; 2400; 7.5)27.915.54.31

Compared to your .308

.308 Win. (125; 2675; 8.75)98.12.16

I shot 300wm for 30+ years and stupidly had to sell it.
I don’t think a 35whelen will be bad , worst case I buy the brake version with a sleeve
