Hi all,

Looking to try something new - I have an itch for a stubby 338 and I think others have itched it before, so figured I’d see if anyone has something to move down the road before I make my own.

Fairly open to suggestions - looking for an UL backpack 338 rifle.

- less than 24” barrel
- preferably carbon fiber barrel

Let’s hear what you have!

Thanks!

I had the exact same thought as you, so when I put together my Defiance AnTi X / HNT26 build earlier this year, I had a 16" 338 Federal prefit barrel made for it.

I've used this caliber for several years for deer hunting in brown bear country.
The 338 Fed has great ballistics and is ideal for a short action standard bolt face, along with factory ammunition, though a little difficult to find. I found the Federal Fusion 200's shot fantastic in this setup. I was planning on loading up 186 Shock Hammers when I ran out of the Fusion's.

This setup weighs 7 lbs exactly as pictured. If you didnt need a chassis, I'd be tempted to build this setup in the new Rokstock.

I have this barrel for sale, as I'm not going to be using it a lot. The AnTi X is a great action for this, as you can easily remove a scope to swap prefit barrels, then mount it back up without losing zero. I have a 6 CM, 6.5 Cm and this 338 Fed for my action. I know a place that is selling the AnTi X for previous years pricing as well ($1579). I'm wanting $900 shipped for this barrel.

Hey B_Reynolds_AK,

Thanks for reaching out and the consideration! The thought of having a switch barrel setup wasn’t really on my radar, but has merit for sure.

I think the 16” barrel is a bit shorter than I’d like to go with right now, but I might reach out to learn more about velocities and the switch barrel concept.

Take care,

JB

Had a Kimber Montana in 338 fed that was a lightweight shooter. Maybe check with Steve at Double Broomed Mountain Rifles in Alaska. He has done several.

I have a carbon six tikka prefit that's 20" chambered in 338 rcm. Comes with 3 boxes of Hornady superformance as well. It's got a threaded muzzle, has about 50 rounds down it. Selling because my buddy wanted a 16" barrel to run suppressed. He is looking to get $650 for the package.

"Fairly open to suggestions - looking for an UL backpack 338 rifle." Someone already said it but Kimber made what you are looking for. I have had two. Like a fool I sold the first one. The second I bought not long after the first one got sold and I'll never sell it. It literally fits in my backpack. My wife has one in 308 and loves it as well. Cant go wrong. Just make brass from 308 , 338 bullets are coming back around too
