33 Nosler Worth It?

Greetings,

I have a tikka 338 win mag I am thinking about converting to a 33 Nosler for a little more horse power. There does not seem to be a lot of load data out there regarding the 33 nosler. The data i have found does not seem to show a lot of improvement over the win mag which was surprising because the 33 nosler has quite a bit more case capacity. I am wondering if anyone has any good experience with the 33 Nosler they can share? I live in Alaska and this rifle will be my bear hunting rifle. Because of the tikka action, all my loads will have to be a SAAMI length due to mag COAL restrictions. I am interested in the 225-250 grain bullet weights.

I don’t have a 33 Nosler, but have loaded a lot for the 338 and 340 Wby. The Nosler is in between the two in case capacity and velocity. SAAMI factory pressure test data for the three shows about 100 fps difference between each of them, which seems about right.

As you know a lot of 338 loads are heavily compressed, but going up in case size brings down the published load fill volumes with popular powders. Right away it was less work to reload for the Wby. Before I had a larger capacity 33 cal, I would have seriously considered the Nosler just to not have to vibrate powder as much, but 100 fps would also be worth it on its own.

The only downside I can think of, that might not ever crop up, is the possibility the fatter case with steeper shoulder won’t feed as reliably, but that’s fixable with some tweaking.

At least in the lower 48, 210 to 225 gr bullets have really taken over as the most effective. I was surprised to read old discussions of early adopters of the 338 back in the 1960s talking about 250’s being a little slow.

I can't remember the last time I saw 33 Nosler brass or ammo on the shelf.

Nosler's lack of cartridge support now and in the future would be a big no for me.
If you load your own and buy enough brass to support that barrel, maybe.

I have one. I throated it a little long for 250gr bullets. It has a 20” barrel and shoots 250 AB right at 2700. It’s a handy little rifle. I’m a fan of it but I also like to build oddball stuff and got components/reamer for next to nothing..

Let me know if you end up building one. I got a pile of load data and brass.

I had one for a short while. Its about 100fps more than the WM. Its about the most you can get out of a Tikka action in that caliber.
Sold the brass dies and barrel when I realized how wildly unnecessary it was especially for the recoil.

I actually have a 338fed barrel on that action now. Does everything the nosler can just at only up to 400y instead of 700+ that I would never shoot at an animal with it anyways.

If I was building a 338 now I might go with the rpm. Which is actually slightly less that the WM. But still performs more than I need at 500yards and more.

To answer your question about its performance compared the WM, I’d assume it’s like the 30 Nosler meaning they neutered the cartridge by loading it short. With the 30cal variant, guys saw 1-200 fps gain by seating the bullet out longer by way of a custom reamer or long freebore. My SAAMI 30 Nosler runs about the same as a comparably spec’d 300wm but will still do anything I want it to for the ranges I shoot at/plan to shoot at.

I have new adg brass and a Redding die set to sell if you get a barrel. I was going to do a 7-33 nosler on a tikka and ended up in a different direction. Believe I necked two of them down, so I have 98. I still think about making an 18” 33 nosler. As stated, the nosler cartridges are about the largest you can fit in a tikka.

A bit different, but I have a 30 nosler on a different tikka. Spits 210gr ablr’s at 3030fps with a suppressed 22” barrel. About 100fps from a 2” shorter barrel than most win mags can do and faster than the book data for a 24” 300prc. I got mtn tactical mags and my coal is 3.4”
