I am taking my daughter on her first elk hunt in August for a cow. She will be using a 308 Winchester. I am wondering your thoughts on her using a 165 grain Accubond vs. a 150 grain Barnes TTSX. Both shoot very accurate out of the gun. Do any of you have experience with either or both of these bullets on elk?

I have no experience with the Barnes so I can’t give you a comparison but I kill the heck out of them with Accubonds. Given that it’s the heavier of your two options if it’s flying good for her that would be my pick.

I killed a bull last year with 150 gr TTSX in my 308 at about 80 yds. One shot in the upper lungs, he stumbled around a few steps then fell over and died. It was a complete pass through shot and I was happy with the performance.

I have used both on cow elk, I would be happy with either! That being said, I will probably go with the TTSX this year. We had very little meat loss!

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like both the Accubonds and the TTSX perform well on elk with proper shot placement.

Use the Nosler Accubonds for sure. They will open up better at longer distances if need be. The Barnes bullets all need very high velocity to open up thus limiting your range…. The 308 should probably be limited to about 350 yards when shooting at elk….

There are several 308 rounds capable of taking an elk responsibly at up to 400 yards. I mainly shoot a Nosler 168 grain E tip, and at 400 yards has 1600 ft-lbs of energy and ~2100 FPS velocity. That's plenty of pop for an elk if shot placement is correct. 400 is my limit, frankly that goes for any animal regardless of what I'm rifle shooting.

I used a .308 with 165 grn accubonds on my elk this year. The shot was 90 yards. Here is the entrance and exit.

Entrance shattered the scapula all the way down

Exit through the scapula. Bullet was just under hide.
