I have shot a 308 since late sixty as I am a one rifle person but 500 yards is to far for sheep with a 308 IMHO after recovering the sheep I was sick to my stomach

It isn’t a “308” issue, it’s a bullet issue. That bullet just didn’t upset. It can and does happen with all of them eventually- regardless of impact velocity. You could shoot a hundred more sheep with the same gun and bullet at the same range and not see it again.

My assumption was the 150 SST "peters out" rather quickly compared to say the 178 ELDX. Even though it was good velocity at the muzzle, I'm guessing it was below the threshold at 500.

I would agree it is a bullet issue but after the fact I also think maybe not enough velocity left

Given your MV, at 0ft DA it still had over 1,800fps impact. At 5,000ft DA- which is more likely, it was over 2,000fps impact.

Plenty of speed, you just got a “one in a thousand” weird one.

This doe was at 540 yards. Also with a 155 TMK.

A lot of folks blast on the CTR stock but heck I like it for a hunting stock. I put the vertical grip on there and it’s great. It’s got good ergonomics for off hand or position shooting. Also, you don’t have to remove or adjust a cheek piece to pull the bolt.

I’ve gotten exceptional accuracy from a CTR 6.5 CM and 308 out of factory stock. Some are quick to remove the bolster ahead of the recoil lug so it’s free floated to the lug. I’ve never found that contact point to affect accuracy and I bet Tikka designed it that way. Probably has some effect on harmonics.

those sst’s need to be nose-ringed

the heavy for cal eld-vt’s sound interesting for slow fats like the 308, I’d give those a run if Hornady rolls them up for me

The 530 yard stag video I posted on page 1 the guy said nice mushroom on that 178 eldx under offside hide on what looks like slight quartering away heart shot, he didn’t weigh it or have a pic of it though. All about that bullet.

I completely agree. I have had zero reasons, other than to blow money, changing the CTR stock. I just wish it was chambered in more than two cartridges.

They made a very brief appearance on Euro Optic last year but there is a 6.5 PRC UPR sku. They sold out quickly but the UPR is simply a CTR barreled action in a different stock and a 20 MOA rail.
