Why insane ? no pressure signs.
Book was 72 max
In Berger's book for a 185 in a 300 WSM 63.8gr is max. Just because you may not be seeing obvious signs of excessive pressure your getting some excessive velocities and those don't come without something going on.

FWIW, running your load through QL using a 24in barrel and default OAL of 2.860 it says you're at nearly 80,000 psi and the velocity matches up very close to what you said.

For a 300 Winchester Short Magnum, which source lists 72 gr max of Hunter for a 185 gr bullet.

Regardless, your velocity is so far out there as to be considered "insane". Does that not register as an indication of what pressures that load is generating?

Hey maybe it is over pressure and I'm not seeing it.

What does QL say about the 175 LRX at 71.5 Hunter, Barnes max load is 72.5

Well the chart before I mess with it calls for -10” @ 300 and -25” @ 400. In reality I’m at -12” @ 275 and -24” @ 375. I agree with the Barnes data showing I should be sending them a lot slower, that’s where the head scratching began.

Sounds like your scope might have lost zero between 100 yd and 275/375 groups.

How tall are your rings? That seems pretty high for a sight height for most hunting rifles but sight height isn’t causing that large of a discrepancy. What rifle is it?

AB tested the 175 LRX at 0.482 g1. Close enough for distances most hunters have any business shooting at.

Hard to know where to start, but I'll give it a try.

"71.5 Hunter / 3,130 fps" No pressure tested Hunter 300 WSM loads give that 180/185 velocity with a 24" barrel. None.

"No Pressure Signs." Did you know you can be 20,000 PSI over SAAMI max pressures and have "no pressure signs?" You can't look at a case and think you know can know anything about pressure as has been proven time and again in ballistics labs with pressure testing equipment. It's a 1940's handloading technique which has been thoroughly debunked.

"Book was 72 Max." Barrels and chambers are all different, some can take more powder than others to produce the same pressure/velocity. Without pressure testing equipment the only way you can know if your load is safe is to compare your velocities to pressure tested loads from the powder and bullet makers.

Go look up Hunter from the manufacturer - your velocity is not listed as achievable with safe pressures. The Max load is 69.7 gr's (for a 180 not 185) at 2,999 fps from a 24" barrel and 64,800 PSI.

Hunter has a burn rate similar to H4350, and produces similar velocities (generally slightly faster, maybe 25 fps). 3,000 fps with a 180 is about the max velocity to expect with Hunter from a 24" barrel with pressures under 65,000 PSI.

But as I said, your face is your own to do with as you will.
