300 WSM with Unknown Munitions

I received my loaded ammo yesterday. It may be a little while before I'm able to get out and shoot but everything looks really good.

Jake kept me in the loop all the way through the load development. You can see below the kind of detailed data analysis that he does to get the most optimized load for your rifle. He decided on a load of 67.4 grains of R26 with the bullets seated .020" off the lands.

I picked up a 300 WSM to possibly use on my elk hunt in 2021. Very interesting thread and looking forward to seeing your results this fall!

Dang Justin your barrel is fast!! RL26, Fed mag primers and Bertram brass out of a 26” proof and my velocity is a consistent 90ft/s slower then yours.

On an interesting note, I also loaded up the same with std LR primers, lowest charge is 30ft/s faster then the same charge with the Fed mag primers. I’ll updated my final results when done.

Edit: Very interesting everything below 68grs of RL26 was faster by 15-30ft/s but as the charge increased the variance did as well, at 68grs I have a 1ft/s diff favoring mag primers BUT the mag primers has an SD 12 and ES 28 2,857ft/s where the std LR primes have an SD 6 and ES 15 at 2,856ft/s, think I found my load already!!

At that point only 80, now 120 and I am seeing an increase in velocity already. By this weekend I’ll have 160 down it so hoping it’s seasoned by then.

Im curious if youve shot in hot weather. I found a rl26 load that shot amazingly well in my 300wsm, about the same powder weight and velocity you are at, but at high ambient temps i would get bad bolt lift and my velocities would spike. I switched to rl16, which more temp stable, and grouping is close to the same, at 2910fps, and no issues with temps. This was all with the 190gr ablr and nosler brass, btw

I shot yesterday in 90* temps with decent humidity no heavy bolt lift, attached are my 5 shot groups, my barrel should be broken in now hopefully. I’ve shot RL26 for years without issue but most years I stopped shooting when it was really hot out. What I found is mag primers really didn’t do anything better then a std large rifle primer in any of the WSM’s I’ve had but pressures did spike earlier with them. The CCI BR2 seem to produce less pressure then the win LR primers as well.

I have. The 215's work very well in my experience and I have a few friends I trust who say the same. The key as always is making sure you shoot them where you intend to.

Average of 5 randomly selected, virgin .300 WSM Norma brass was 78.0 grains

The 215 Berger is my favorite 30 cal bullet if I want a rifle capable of long-range shots. The extra weight and higher BC allow it to buck the wind better than a lighter, less efficient bullet.

If I was only shooting shorter distances like 500 yards and under, I may choose a lighter bullet with higher velocity for the flatter trajectory. Doubtful though since the 215 has worked so well for me on elk and deer.

Why would the Norma brass be more accurate?

I'm using Norma brass because we were able to get higher velocity.

Consistency as in internal capacity or hardness would make one type of brass more accurate than the next.
