.300 wsm barrel chop

I’ve got a tikka t3x .300wsm with a TBAC 7” suppressor on it.

When I threaded the barrel, I left it full length.

Shoots great but it feels like I’m I’m lugging a civil war cannon around in the woods.

Shooting offhand is also challenging with so much length and weight out front.

Thinking about going to 20”.

It’s currently chrono-ing 180g Hornady CXs at 2800fps.

How much will I lose with the chop? 25fps per inch seems to be the standard I’m seeing.

You never really know until its done because barrels sometime have a mind of their own and it could be a little more or less but I think that's a good estimate and it'll likely be pretty close to that.

Having had numerous barrels shortened I can say with certainty, for me, the convenience of running a shorter barreled rifle with a can on it far outweighed any velocity loss.

I had my T3 300WSM cut and threaded to 20" earlier this year.
Diligent Defense LTi with Barnes 165gr over H4350 is just under 3100.

That 180 load seems slow. Regardless, chop it. You'll never go back. Go shorter than you think you should.

Is it just to lose weight? Generally a 24" #4 sporter barrel weighs about 2 lbs. By chopping 4 or so inches from the muzzle area, you are going to save about 6 ounces - if losing potentially 100 to 150 fps is ok for the weight savings - do it.
