300 win mag factory Load for elk / moose

I pulled the trigger on a 300 win mag and now I am looking for some factory load options for elk and moose. Shots are going to be 400 yards and under. Nothing too exotic. I am not long range shooter or much of a rifle guy. Just want to find a good, reliable and reasonably available load that I can zero and shoot on a pretty limited basis. 20-40 rounds a year of practice and 1-2 in hunting if I get lucky.

Check out Hornady SST 180. Lighter recoil and great speed. The SST is similar to Accubond and performs great.

Not sure on the moose, but from personal experience the 180 dropped my elk at 250 yards this year and he dropped. (Shoulder shot, no heart and still dropped him) If you get on a moose hunt, spend some other time and money on a heavier bullet in either the accubond or possible partition.

Since you don't shoot very much you can afford the $40-50 25/box and the lighter recoil will help you with the 300 win mag.

Thanks. Seems like 180 is the way to go.

the 200 grain Accubond makes a deadly combo for the 300 mag as well - I don't have much experience with SST's but the guys I hunt with in Wyoming have been using 162/7mm's since they came out and brag to me about how explosively deadly they are, I know from a lot of experience that Accubonds are not "explosive" but as long as the example bullets are pulled from dead animals I guess it's academic - tough to beat a .30 ANYTHING

Lots of good combinations out there for what you're looking for. Any controlled expansion 180gr load will deliver for you, can't think of any really bad ones.

I've been using the 180gr Accubond in Nosler ammunition since they started making it....no survivors. I'd also look at the Partition, Trophy Bonded Bearclaw or TSX. They all flat work.

Any ideas on monolithic i.e. No lead or lead free loads?

I am thinking ahead about using something that I could shoot in CA and other lead free places.

Thanks for the ideas.

I've had good luck with the Barnes ttsx and federal trophy copper in 300 win mag. I'm shooting 165g trophy coppers in my 300 win mag and they are accurate for me. I've taken an elk and a mule deer with it.

Some rifles like the monolithic bullets and some don't. I'd start with the TSX or Trophy Copper in factory loads and go from there. They're probably better used against the larger animals you're talking about than small framed deer. If a lead free round appeals to you- they work.

Here's a 100yd group. This rifle puts the first two right together and then will string the next ones if you don't let the barrel cool.

if you can replicate that group pattern consistently I'd look first at the bedding and action screw torquing if you haven't already

That's how the gun shoots for me. It's in an b&c Alaskan stock, pressure pads still in place. Action screws torqued. If I let it sit, the shots stay together. It's a stock barrel. Sorry to derail the thread!!!

Gkprice- pm me your thoughts so we don't derail this thread. I'd like yours or others opinions. I always thought it was a hot barrel, but I am far from an expert.

Back to the thread. I'd try out the different lead free tips. I haven't tried the gmx's but the ttsx from Barnes and the trophy coppers have shot well in my rifles.

I really really like the Federal Nosler Partition 180gr. and have my rifle zeroed for that round, I practice with the Federal Soft Point 180gr.

Out of a .300wm at under 400, I'd have to say pretty much anything you can buy would be adequate.

This is terrible advice.
I hate when someone thinks a magnum cartridge thinks it makes up for other variables.
Elk are big tough animals and deserve to die as quickly and humanely as possible.

Monolith bullets like GMX, TTSX are good places to start.
Moose are big but easier to kill than elk.
You owe the animal accurate shot and proper bullet selection.

Did no one kill elk before monolithics? A good cup & core in the vitals will still work. Good bullets don't make up for poor marksmanship either ;)

You could sink the queen Mary with the amount of elk that been killed with plain old run-of-the-mill green and yellow box Remington offerings and Winchester White box fodder.

You could also drive from an Oregon beach to the Statue of Liberty in a Toyota Prius but where's the fun in that ?
