300 prc barrel length for 212gr eldx

What’s up rokslide, I am once again coming to you for your knowledge. What I’m looking for is first hand knowledge/ numbers on velocity for a 300 prc 212 gr. Eldx box ammo out of your barrel length at your altitude. I’m looking at picking up a fierce firearms ct rogue specifically for the light weight aspect. The rifle is going to be used exclusively for elk hunting between 8500-10500 ft. The possibility of using a suppressor is there but again for the weight aspect I might stick with a muzzle brake.

My current rifle is a browning xbolt 300 prc western hunter 26” barrel moving those eldx averaged to 2900fps. The rifle naked weighs 7.7 lbs if memory serves. So as an upgrade for the 2024 rifle season I’m looking at a fierce firearms ct rogue which the website says naked is 5.7 lbs (no barrel length stated). The available options are 20”, 22”, and 24” which poses the question for me. Which length is the best bang for your buck, or I guess worth the weight?

As an add on, there are cross canyon shots available in the areas I’m hunting. So I’d like to retain as much range as possible. Thanks ahead of time, and happy new year.

I spent hours going back and forth on barrel length for my build. I handload so it's a bit different and there were reports of guys getting close to 2900fps with a 22" barrel which was my goal. It will be suppressed 100% of the time. I have everything in hand but my stock so I'm patiently waiting the best I can. I don't think it's unfeasible at all but whether the accuracy is there at that high node is my concern.

Looks like you have your answer with the factory loads though.

I would have Unknown Munitions load ammo for you. It's a little pricy up front but you are buying quality brass from ADG/Peterson that UM will reload once you have shot through them. If having UM load for you I would go with 208gr ELD-M or 215gr Berger over the 212gr eldx.

As for barrel length, I had a custom with a 24" bartlein carbon that was shooting 230gr Berger going 2980fps. N570 and it was stout. Shot lights out though.

My Christensen Arms Rudgeline FFT 300 PRC shooting factory Precision Hunter ammo is at 2809. That is with a new barrel so it will speed up some. The FFT has a 22” barrel, but i think that includes the muzzle break so i think the actual barrel is more like 20-21”.

24" barrel. factory 225 eldm going 2800fps and 212 eldx hand loads went 2850fps. I did not have them loaded crazy hot though. Elevation is 2000ft

I like my 24" barrel, but it could see it feeling end heavy on a rifle that light. And if a can is a consideration, then I would defiantly go 22 or possibly even 20. Since you're kind of on the fence about a suppressor, and it is a 30 cal magnum, I would go 22" if I was in your shoes.

The range of your rifle won't be an issue no matter what barrel length you choose. Be aware though, a 300 prc that light is not going to be the easiest thing to shoot across canyons.

Another thought is cutting the barrel down on the x-bolt you already have. At 7.7, it isn't what I would call a heavy rifle. You would loose a little bit off that 7.7lbs and add a lot of mobility but shaving 4" off of it.

Also thankyou for the fierce post. After reading the stories about fierce im strongly reconsidering going that route. I’ve got enough money sunk into the whole elk hunting game and I’m not willing to gamble $2500 on a company that doesn’t seem to honor their own warranty.

Little update here. I got the first 30 shots on my proof 22" barrel yesterday. Hoping to speed it up a bit as it breaks in. Roughly 1200' elevation and 70 degrees. I had some inconsistencies with some of the loads so I'm going to try and nail that down a bit more in my process.

Appreciate the info. Looks like I'm right at 33fps per inch of barrel so it looks like I'm right in the ballpark. Is your barrel new too? I was hoping mine would speed up a bit.

I have about 180 rounds through my rifle. Not new, but definitely on the front end of its life.

I'm hoping I can get even closer to you with another 75 or so down the barrel. Maybe mine is quicker than I thought. I picked up some magnum primers to see if that will help with my consistency on those stouter loads.
