30 nosler vs 300 wby vs 300 rum

If I was going to buy another 30 cal it would be a PRC. I do handload but I think you are going to see a lot of that stuff on shelves when ammo comes back.

If not reloading I would get a 300 PRC or 300 Win Mag.

I have a Weatherby, couple Winchester magnums and a SAUM. Had a couple Ultra Mags. Never owned a Nosler.
The 300 win mag is a great all around cartridge. The Weatherby and Ultra mag are slightly better, but don’t think you’ll notice much difference.
I absolutely love my 300 SAUM. The rifle points like a shotgun and carry’s like a dream. With the 168 TSX load, it’ll take down any elk past my comfortable range.

I like 300 win, but want more punch at longer distance(>500 yards)

My wife shot a bull elk at 1165 yards with a 300 win mag. It left a baseball-sized exit hole. It's got plenty of horsepower.

I don't hand load so 215 berger seems like a no go for me.
Unknown Munitions will make you anything he has in stock. If you can find some 215s send them to him, and he would load them. Or you could have him load you up some 225 ELD-Ms. They have been nasty on elk for us as well. But then again if you are going to have him load for ya, I would get the 30 Nosler.

With factory ammo, your choices of “long range” factory ammo will be limited for the 300 Weatherby or 300 RUM unless you go with ammo made by a company like Unknown Munitions. Federal has a 300 Win Mag load with 215 gr Bergers at an advertised 2850 fps. Actual availability is another question. While that might not be the killer that a properly loaded 6.5 Creedmoor would be, I wouldn’t hesitate to take it out beyond 500 yards.

Have you considered a 300 Norma Magnum? I have been seeing Norma and Berger ammo available for it, loaded with 230 gr Bergers.

BTW - I just got a 30 Nosler throated for 230 Bergers.

How do 230 bergers perform on elk?

Thanks for letting me know!

230 Targets work great on elk.

230 OTMs have not been great. One will work great the next would ice pick right through. I changed lots but still had bullet schizophrenia with the OTMs.

I have had mixed results like you are reporting on whitetails with the 210 gr hunting VLDs out of a 300 RUM. I don’t like hearing this because OTMs were all I could find while I was waiting for my rifle to get back from the gunsmith. Unfortunately, I think I have read where Mike at Hells Canyon Armory has said pretty much the same thing. I was comparing the void depth between the 230 gr OTM and the 215 gr HT tonight. It was much deeper with 215s. However, the diameter of actual hole was much smaller with the 215s.

If I can’t find some 230 gr HTs, I might have to go with the Best of the West high shoulder shot.

As an aside, I went with the 230s over the 215s because the odds of me having a less than 300 yard shot are greater than me having a shot over 600 yards.
