Hey guys i have an action just sitting here, im not an 06 fan, what caliber would you guys recommend building this in to for a long range target gun and hunting rifle out to 600. Thank in advance. Ps this will be for my wife who is not shy of big booming calibers.

280 ai or 6.5-06 or if open to a wildcat 6.5 Sherman(140s@ 3300)

Thoes are good ideas! any thoughts on a 28 nosler other than brass is pricy, looking to shoot barnes bullets through it if at all possible. I would need to research the 6.5 sherman.

I did exactly what you are doing a couple years ago. Started out with a 6.5-06... hated it. Had to form brass from 26-06 brass which was then hard to find. So I set the barrel back and turned it into a 6.5-284. Much happier. Better load data/dies and Lapua brass.

Definitely 280 AI. Good Nosler brass available, so no need to fireform. Load up some 168 Bergers in front of Reloder 26 and you're off to the races!

I have built 2 in 6.5x284 so that's my take, if you gotta change. other wise leave it a 30-06.

however a straight 284 probably should be considered.

I'm not not an 06 fan the wife is currently shooting a 7 wby mag and she has been looking at what to do with this gun and turn it in to something more efficient in that 5-800 yard mark that carries 1500 foot pounds or 2k fps to that 800 yard mark

For target shooting 6.5-06 (maybe even AI version) for hunting the 338-06 is pretty impressive :)

My Sako75 in 338-06; Was originally a 25-06 which I have the barrel and can switch barrels if I please. The Sako 75 is a heavy rifle and works well in a 338-06; bit over a 23inch barrel (same as factory length) and pushes a 200gr SST at 2800fps. Some people go longer in barrel length for velocity gain.

I might add to my other comments like the other posts recommend the 280AI is probably best for the longer ranges you want to hunt at. The 338-06 is good, but there really is no substitute for horsepower for longer ranges, the 06's case capacity is left wanting trying to push the big high BC 338 pills.

I built a custom 280 AI on a Winchester Model 70 classic sporter that had been chambered in 270 Win. I love that rifle.

A 6.5-06 would be fantastic also and simple to from from 25-06 brass.

all good options, im still up in the air on what way to go, i guess a good scope can fix some of the speed issues with being able to dial for distance as long as you know your limits as a shooter and the limits of your gun,
