I recently acquired a new to me 30/06 w/24 inch barrel and 1:10 twist I’ve always found the Berger 210 VLD to be very accurate in my 300 Winchester and am thinking of giving them a shot in the new 06. Anybody out there with some real world experience with the combo and R26 powder? If not R26, other powders where you’ve found success?

I might give the 185’s a try after the 210’s. I did a good job of hoarding R26 a while back and have plenty. Quickload leads me to believe I can get to ~ 2750 FPS and that bullet really should retain the velocity and energy well.

I’m a velocity ho, though. 185 grains out of a 30-06 at 2845 fps is no joke.

Those are some smokin' velocities from the '06 with those bullets. I see the Ramshot Hunter published data from Western is right there for the 185, but wow. I may need to get out of my comfort zone and try some different powders.

To answer the OP, I haven't tried that bullet or R26 in any of my '06s. I too prefer the 180 class bullets. I think of R26 as being too slow for the '06 case, but maybe if you can load long so you can dump a whole bunch in there it will work. For reference, I'm usually using powders around the R16/4350 burn speed with 180s in the '06. I can see going to the 4831/Hunter class powders for heavier bullets, but R26 and the other true magnum powders strike me as a bit too slow for the '06. I've been wrong before, though, so maybe that will be the ticket for that heavy of a bullet.

It would definitely be at the top end assuming I can get the bullet to shoot. Quickload shows it as being 1k PSI over pressure at 2750 - its tough to say what the real world results will be given it would be on the edge. At that velocity, it carries 2k FPS and 2k energy to 500 yards. Even touching 2650 would put it in line with Pharmseller's 185 Gr load. Stay tuned and we'll see how it goes.

Hunter is all I use in a number of 30-06s.

Make no mistake, it’s stout.
