3-9x40 enough for medium range antelope?

Generally, 3X9 should be a fine choice. And it was for decades, until the manufacturers created a market for bigger and bigger scopes, with more and more magnification, and all the whistles and bells. But only you can tell if a 3X9 will work for you, given the condition of your eyes and your sight.

If your 3x9 has good turrets should work fine. I'm in the same age range and used to use a 6x to those ranges with no issues.

I have to admit one of my western slope buddies talked me into trying a few scopes with more power while we were sitting around bear camp one year. Now I have a NX8 2.5-20, NXS 5.5-22, Atacr 4-16, NXS 3-15. The 5.5-22 may be a bit much but the others sure do make longer range shots easier for me these days.
