I just went through this same exercise and went with the new Zeiss V4 3-15x44. I think it weighs 22 oz if I remember correctly, and it has a nice windage knob and zerostop. Glass is great though I think the VX-5 edged it out a bit but not by a lot. Go to Redhawk Rifles, I got my V4 there for $680 to my door, they have $100 off right now.
I have just read too much stuff on Leupolds loosing their tracking. I was really stuck on the VX-5 but it has the suckiest windage turret known to man and I like to dial my windage. It is $150 to have it swapped out to the ZL knob the VX-6 has. My buddy just bought one and we went to the range and tried it out....had great glass and the ZL knob was ok but overall I passed. The zoom was really gritty and got stuck between 10 and 11 power and again at 3 and 4 power....must have a metal shaving burr that needs to be filed down. I was at Sportsman's Warehouse yesterday when Leupolds rep came by and I overheard him saying there is a new VX-5 coming very shortly that has the ZL windage knob as standard.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, it will be mainly used for the bush and out to 350m with the occasional longer shot hunting Which is why i want the 3 power , shooting steel will be it's secondary role and I want to try an keep it around US$1300 or less thats why I'm not looking at the vx6. At this stage I'm leaning towards the leupold or the vortex just for reticle choice ,I emailed leupold about the windplex with firedot and they said they would have one for the vx5 in the next 6 months so I might wait for that because I think it would be handy for the bush. Does anybody have the vx5 with the windplex? Is it thick enough for Bush hunting without a dot?

At your ranges I think the wind plex might be unnecessary, and might be a little too "busy" of a reticle. I have a vx5hd 3-15 with B&C reticle and zl2 turret on my 308. The reticle accurately gets me to 500 at 12x mag. without dialing, and I can dial beyond 500 at 15x mag, best of both worlds. The reticle is definitely thick enough for bush hunting, can't speak to the windplex, but probably it's fine.

They do offer the Whiskey 5 with MOA milling hunter reticle. Available on the 3-15 in either objective size.
