Looking for a durable dummy simple scope in the 3-10x ish range with capped turrets and 30mm tube. I keep coming back to to the 3-10 SHV. I’m a little concerned about some of the reports stating the eye relief is a little short as it’s going on a 375 Ruger without a MB with no plans of adding one.
Can anyone comment on this? Thanks

I've had no such issues with mine. It lives on a 5.5lb 280AI and is about perfect for what you describe. I would buy with confidence.

What rifle is your .375 Ruger? Another issue is the short tube which limits the position. On a Ruger, I had to use extended ring to get the proper eye relief and even then it wasn’t ideal.

I’ve been using one for years. I’ve never noticed it having bad eye relief. Quite the opposite, seems really easy for me to get behind. Maybe I’m just used to it, it seems great every time I use it. Almost the perfect hunting scope for what I do, just a bit heavy.

Mine is on a 5lb 7mm08, has held up well and dialed flawlessly. I've never noticed problems with eye relief.

I’d definitely mount it as far forward as possible to barely get a full field of view and maximize what eye relief it has. It’s listed as 3-1/2”, but hopefully someone with the scope can explain the range of eye relief from low to high power, since often a single number is the minimum eye relief at highest power where it’s shortest. On heavy recoiling rifles I’ve often used a mid magnification and set the scope for that eye relief, which will be close to an inch longer than the minimum.

It’s strange that the Nightforce manual doesn’t elaborate on how eye relief changes with magnification.

Eye relief doesn't always change with magnification on all scopes. I never noticed any issues or perceptible change during use on the couple of SHV 3-10 that I had.

Fwiw my 5-20 shv eye relief is consistent across the magnification range. Eye box is tighter on the upper end, of course, but the eye relief is consistent.

That’s cool. Now I’m curious which scopes change and which stay the same.

IME Leupys change quite a bit across mag range
That’s what I remember as well - like over an inch different.

Swaro only lists one number, Burris lists some as 3” to 3-1/2” and shotgun scope with a maximum eye relief of 5” and no minimum, Zeiss lists some with one number and others models with a range 3” to 3-1/2”.

For a big boomer 3” is a little short, and most scope caps take away 1/4” so it’s really 2-3/4”. Knock on wood I’ve never been cut, but I’ve had my glasses pushed into my face a little. Oh, and once the bill of a baseball cap took full recoil and almost made me see stars. Lol

Tract lists a consistent 4" on the Toric 2-10, which is the only one in that line I've played with. I'll confirm that it's consistent with no change. They list a consistent 3.5" on the Response and the Tekoa. Vortex doesn't say that they're consistent, but the HS 2.5-10 seemed like it was at 4".

Leupold definitely isn't consistent at all.

The Burris scopes I've used never seem like it gets shorter, to me. I think that you'd notice a 3/4" change. If I'm down on the stock in a solid position and run the zoom, I don't break my cheek weld or reposition because it changes enough to make me have to move.

I had the 4-14 shv F1 and the eye box was tight. I sold it because of this. The mavens rs1.2 has a much more forgiving eye box. Obviously this isn’t the same scope you’re asking about but it seems like nightforces have tighter eye boxes as a whole.

I own several SHV 3-10s and NXS 2.5-10. I don't notice any difference in eye relief between them. They seem to be consistent at all mag ranges vs. other scopes I've used (Leupold). Heaviest rifle I've used them on is 300WM. I've never gotten bit by them.
