I am looking for some help getting ready for my wifes hunt in unit 501 this fall. She is looking for here first bull and with limited time to hunt I was hoping to get some advice on strategies for hunting 501 this fall. I am mainly looking for suggestions on how to hunt this unit for second season. Basically with the late oct dates should I be concentrating my efforts up high toward treeline and in the dark timber or down in the winter grounds or hayman burn area?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you don't feel like posting here feel free to PM me.

Thanks!

I have hunted this unit but only archery. Not sure where to look that time of year but the unit does have just about every type of terrain. Good luck. Keep me posted on how you do.

How did you do on the archery hunt? Were the elk up high when you were hunting during the archery season or did you find the elk down lower in the timber?

My wife and I were up there on the 17th of Sept scouting around and really look forward to hunting the area. we hiked up to treeline and found a few small herds of elk and a few great bulls but I really am not sure if they will be up that high toward the end of Oct.

Hunted there last year. Passed a few small ones and had a few very close calls on nice bulls. My buddy killed a decent 6x5. Elk were scattered had to get off the beaten path. Shot his bull 3 miles from the truck.
