28 nosler life

I just bought a CA ridgelne in 28, well now of course after I buy something I hear bad things. What’s the barrel life on a 28? I read somewhere where the throat last only 500-600 rounds. What are people experiencing? Thanks

Never shoot more than 3. I changed barrels after 600 didn’t want to find out when I was hunting that accuracy crapped out. Find a load And don’t screw with it anymore.

We have been seeing anywhere from 1000-1200 rounds out of our 28 Noslers, and we run them hard.

As with any big overbore cartridge heat is your enemy. Keep from rapid firing when possible and let it cool when at the range.
Also keep an eye out for carbon build up and clean it out regularly.

Powder choice is a big factor here as well. Some of the top performing powders have a high flame temp and can eat barrels fast no matter how nice you are to them. No free lunch damnit!

Use H1000, Retumbo, IMR 8133. These powders have a lot cooler flame temp than Rl33 and N570. They will not get the super fast velocity, but offer much better throat life.

I put a Straight Jacket Armory shot caller on my Browning long range 28 Nosler. Night and day better than the radial break it came with. APA fat bastard is also a good choice or Area 419 make a good break as well.

I got 580 rounds out of my 28 Nosler, I ran it very hot. Getting 1000 rounds would be a stretch IMO. It's similar to the 300 Rum as far as overbore. I have shot out lots of RUM barrels the average is around 800 rounds.

This would be a great brake for your rifle.

Is the 5 port non self timing? The two smaller units look to be self timing.

No

I’ve shot out 8 Rum barrels all of them went between 8-9 hundred rounds carbon or steel.

I know the feeling. They shoot great then you look like you are hunting turkeys with a shotgun.

I was about to give up on my Nosler M48 in 28 Nosler. The groups were 1.25 at its best. As a last ditch effort I purchased some hammer bullets: 143gr HH, 150gr SH and 155gr HH in their 15 round sample packs. Started with the 143 and did a short ladder test with H1K powder 2gr apart. The first 3 shot were within 1/2 in. Its not supposed to work like that. That's a 4gr spread all within 1/2. I tried the 150s and got similar results. The 155s did the best. The gun has NEVER shot as good with any other bullets and I've tried several of the favorites. So, before you give up on your 28 Noslers try some hammer bullets. I purchased some heavier ones to try and they will be here on the 24th. Good Luck.

Makes sense
As the barrel wears it gets rough from fire cracking and strips copper off the jacket.
A mono would likely be less effected

Curious if you’ve had a chance to shoot the heavier hammers?

I did try the 177gr HH bullets and they shot sub moa. I will do more testing in the spring.
