Hey I was just curious what your thoughts are on this Barnes 155LRX bullet. Currently slapping together a fast twist .270Win, still deciding on a bullet to develop. My two concerns with this bullet is up close and far out. I understand it will "shed petals" at higher speeds an possibly open up nicely still at the Sub 2000fps ranges. Do you or anyone else have and first hand results with the up close penetration it may or may not have achieved and also got an opportunity to dig one of these projectiles out of a critter that was impacted out there where it was most likely traveling Sub 2000FPS? Thank you for any of your input.Barnes has the new 155gr .277 LRX in stock. Needs 1:8 twist. Made for the 6.8 PRC.
Thanks for all that. I greatly appreciate it. I expected your report on the fast impacts, still wondering what a shoulder bone does to them at that speed. I also have my concerns with the performance they claim at lower speeds. Be nice to get some info on someone that dug out a long bomb and had a range/ speed to go with it.My experience is very limited with them.
1 deer and 1 elk shot by buddy with 270WSM.
Impact on elk was probably 2900FPS range (pretty close range shot). Basically broadside, through both lungs, exited. Bullet not recovered due to exit. Elk went 200 ish yards. 2nd shot in neck/spine after catching up with him, dropped him. Not much of a blood trail but some. Small hole through the lungs but enough that the bull was dead, just not super quick dead.
Impact on deer was probably in 2600FPS range. Slightly angled broadside, again both lungs and exited, bullet not recovered. Deer went about 50 yards, stopped, then 2nd shot which got the heart, deer dropped. Mostly likely the 2nd shot wasn't needed and deer was going down at the 50 yard mark. Small hole through lungs, but caught more big blood vessels etc.
I know a few people that sweat on the bible that the LRX is the best hunting bullet on the market. Me not soo much but to each their own.
The general rule is, the faster the better shooting mono's. I would not be concerned at all really up close. Dropping around 2,000 fps expansion is going to be minimal. Your more or less shooting a FMJ.
Barnes has a very "optimistic" or wide interpretation of expansion. The tip of a bullet "expanding" to the width of the base of the bullet or slightly bigger may meet some kind of technical definition of expansion. But isn't meaningfully moving the needle IMHO.
Shoulder isn't stopping it. Shoulder isn't stopping any bullet in general. Thanks for all that. I greatly appreciate it.
