Put a CarbonSix barrel on there in either a faster twist 270 or 280ai
Yes, when running it to what it's capable of...bored to 338 06 or 35 whelen would be cool as an extra rifle, but recoil (when loaded to what the cartridge is capable of) is starting to get up there. Both really cool cartridges that must not be flashy enough or something.....
I found a CVA scout 35whelen for $400 with 180-200gr ttsx it’s lightsaber.Yes, when running it to what it's capable of...
A standard 35 Whelen with 250 gr bullets at 2700 fps (newer Speer data, 2000-MR powder) calculates out to 37.2 ft/lbs in an 8.25 lb rifle (the weight of my 35 AI). I can push it a bit faster with my AI based on having worked up, but I don't need or want that recoil...
My 35 AI with the 200 TTSX at 3000 fps (Power Pro Varmint, Speer data for 180 and 220 gr bullets as the reference and worked up from there) give 33.8 ft/lbs recoil. It's the holy grail of an elk load as far as I'm concerned. Flat trajectory, decisive terminal performance from any sane angle (quartering to or from).
300 Win Mag with a 200 gr bullet at 2900 fps in the same weight gun is 33.8 ft/lbs.
Run the standard Whelen with the Barnes 200 TTSX out of a factory load at 2700 fps advertised velocity and it's 25.6 ft/lbs in the same weight gun.
Yes, they are and with Hammers. Plus RL26 is crazy pixie dust for the .270Win. Lots of guys are getting same performance on similar builds. The 700LA provides max magazine COAL that with properly throated barrel can make the .270Win roar! Those velocities are out of a 270 WIN?!
Learn something new everyday here.Pack it up, send it off to Jess at JES reboring & for $250ish you could have it opened up to .35 Whelan. All the stopping power you'd ever need, plenty for up to 600yds, factory ammo is available (admittedly not common, but It's there) & mild recoil.
efficiency went way up in the 21st, especially the last 15 years
Do you know if this can be done on a m70 classic? I've been thinking about doing it to my gun.I "assembled" a 700LA .270 Win last year with Preferred Barrel 27" SS Light Palma, 1:8Tw, 5R, throated with extra 0.290 freebore to allow max use of magazine at 3.63 COAL, Triggertech trigger, plain jane Magpul 700 stock, Holland heavy recoil lug, 700LA action was trued by Penrod Precision.
This will allow you to shoot heavier, higher BC bullets out of the .270 Win and actually add a lot more horsepower to it. I have 3 loads that I use right now, 156gr Hammer Hunter@3200fps, 170EOL@3075fps and 175TGK@ 2925fps. The 156HH is crazy accurate sub 1/2 MOA at 300 and holds pretty good at 500. You also have the 150ABLR, 150AB, 170BT (new but ladder out to 3000fps), 140BD2 which is crazy BC plus more out there to choose from.
RL26 is the magic pixie dust for the .270 and heavies as well. This will cover 300-600 easily and much further if you choose to do so. The heavier and higher BC will surprise you in energy downrange.
Here is a pic of the dummy rounds I sent to Preferred Barrel to set the throat to give you idea on max COAL you can get to with the 700LA. I was also fortunate to kill my biggest buck with it at 240 yards, not along shot but was nice to see how the 156HH performed and it did so wonderfully. Lungs bloody syrup goop.
