260 rem or 260 AI or a 7mm-08?

My 7mm-08 is my main shooting iron. Deer, elk, antelope, whatever. Very easy on the shoulder but kills out of its weight class.

Same here.
I'll be adding Alberta moose to my list, come October.

I also have a 260 Rem in a Ruger Ultra Lite tanger. Dandy little combo.

260AI sounds cool. Will you get enough extra juice to be worth the squeeze over the standard 260?

I had three 260s, then eventually went 6.5 CM. Non of my 260s had a fast twist barrel.

If I was in your situation, I would go 6.5x284. Basically the same ballistics as the 260AI without the fire forming.

I like my 260 AI. Really you can't go wrong with any of the three choices. I built mine on an older Rem 700 SA. I adjusted the Walker trigger down to 2 lbs and it's been reliable since I first got it as a 22-250 15 years ago. Coldbore hit on a badger 659 yards. 1712070453131.jpeg

I have a 260 AI in a short action. I get low 2900s with 140s in a 25 inch barrel. It’s great if you want to squeeze the absolute max out of a standard bolt face short action and need the velocity to get 800-1000 yards and have the velocity for optimal terminal performance. If I was shooting less than that I’d definitely just do a 6.5 creed. It’s certainly the easy button.

I apologize in advance for the hijack.

What bullet for moose?

P
120 TTSX @ 3195 fps is the front runner, so far. Been using them on everything including a heavy bull elk a few years back. Lots of confidence in that bullet.

I have a box of 139 LRXs inbound to work with a bit till Oct.
My Montana doesn't like 140 TTSXs

Another vote for the 7mm-08. In my opinion, it is the best all around cartridge on the .308 case. Mild recoil, but with the capability of shooting 120 to 160 grain projectiles with good velocity and trajectory.

I assume your anti-CM sentiments extend to the 6mmCM, but if not, that would be my vote. It would still be something philosophically different than your 243.

I have been considering a 7-08 also. I'd want to use 160-180 gr bullets. But there is no denying pharm's success with that cartridge.

Funny I guess my creed statement was offensive, sorry. My 1/8 twist 260 will do everything the CM will do. It just seems folks worship it like it’s the only rifle ever. Good rifle for its indented purpose. But I like my 260 better, even my 1/9 twist barrels id shoot over a CM. But that me to each their own.

Not offensive. To each their own. Just seems a bit closed-minded.

Enneagram 4? (me too)

I totally understand this, swap 7mm-08 for 260, and I’m in the same boat as you. I have legitimately TRIED to like/want a 6.5CM, but I just can’t do it.

My recommendation would be a 7-08AI or 7SAW.

I have a 6.5Creed, 260, regular 7-08, a 7-08AI and a 308. The 7-08AI gets more use than any of the others. 150-162 bullets in the 2750-2950 fps range are a breeze with it.

I too, don’t get the fireforming comments. I fireformed 200 pieces of Lapua brass for mine. During that process I got my scope mostly dialed in and my barrel “broken in”. If you are doing serious load development before you hit 200 rounds on your barrel, then I would wager to say you are going to end up having to tinker later on anyway. If I treat that brass good, I can probably get 10 more loadings on it. Doesn’t seem like that big of a deal to me.

Great thread and comments. I have a donor 700 SA that is currently chambered in .308. I already have a cheap, but semi - accurate 7mm-08 by Savage. I also have an old .270 and a custom .280AI. I want to work on something new on the 700 and can’t decide what to do with it. This thread has been helpful. I like the .260 idea but I kind of want to build a bad ass 7mm-08.
